How do you test the mods you build?

I am just curious how you all go about testing your mods? I mean like do you have to be in the game while working on the mod, or some special tool to test before the game? Are there certain requirements to meet, or computer specs to worry about?

Not that I want to try mod building, I am exceedingly happy with all the great work you all do here!
