Add-on button in character screen isn't there

I've never used add-ons before but have decided to add recount and gearscore as i'm getting close to end game. I've downloaded them, extracted them, with following pathways:
D:\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\GearScore3.1.17
D:\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Recount-v3.3h_release

i start WoW but on the character selection screen there is no "Add-on" button on the lower left of the screen and I can't find anywhere that will tell me how i might be able to get the button to appear. Sorry if I'm missing the obvious. I'm not a very computery person

When you open the .zip folders that you download the addons in you need to only extract the folder(s) located in it, not make a new one with the version number appended to it.

There should be a folder name and then a .toc file immediately following the folder with the same name. Recount for instance:
D:\World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns\Recount\Recount.toc

thats sorted it. thought i was doing something wrong but as i say i'm not great on computers. thanks for that
