When you kill a enemy a quest you get a text message that tells you how many of those you need to kill to level up. Works for quests, exploration and all other ways you gain experience as well. Works the same way for factions, when you gain reputation you get a message telling you how many more of that action you need to increase your standing. Or be more hated, depending on what you are doing.
