BigRed  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.1
by: Eidolarr [More]

BigRed is a tiny addon that lets you customize your game error messages. Not Lua errors, mind you, but game errors - things like "out of range" and "not enough energy." It offers the following features:

- choose your font!
- move the messages
- adjust the maximum number of messages to show
- throttle the messages
- set the justification
- adjust the text color color

By default, you should barely notice this addon - it imitates the default error frame, with subtle improvements. To customize the appearance, type /bigred.

Clean up those hideous big red lines of text from the middle of your otherwise-sexy UI!

If you have any suggestions, leave 'em here, but I do not intend to expand the pleasantly limited scope of the addon significantly. Please leave questions, comments, etc. as well. I would especially appreciate bug reports.

New in 2.0: I've removed the GUI sliders for fade time and fade percent. These were really debugging tools that got left in. BigRed will still honor your old settings here, and if you are truly determined, you can use BigRed:SetFadePercent and BigRed:SetFadeTime to tweak them. There is also a new width slider that allows you to constrict the area in which the messages are displayed; any messages exceeding this area are elided.

Note that a recent patch applied a hideous hack to UI_ERROR_MESSAGE. Instead of implementing throttling in UIErrorsFrame, where it belongs, they've made it so that *some* error messages don't consistently trigger events. There's nothing I can do about this, and it's a problem with the stock error frames, too. Sorry.

This AddOn broke with Legion . Just displays numbers instead of the actual error messages now.

No answer to either of my PMs, my ticket, or the ticket posted after mine at wowace. There was an update (small one, TOC or some such) on the 26th of June, but no reply from the author. Someone has posted a "working" version on WoWI, but since I never had a problem with it working (I suspect I had the libraries it was probably missing installed already), there's no change for me (and there doesn't seem to be a change in the code itself that I can see).

Ok I'll send him a PM and see if it gets me anywhere. Still no answer on my - or someone else's - ticket. Although he posted an update the other day, the changelog doesn't say anything about filtering, and it still does not filter. And the author is Rabbit, I am sure he's still around, since he's a manager of BigWigs. But it seems like this was simply something removed without telling users and since all the help and descriptions still say that it is available it all points to being a mistake in my eyes. Dropping him a PM here and at wowace.

Should I send him a PM? I just don't want to bug someone unnecessarily. It states everywhere - on the descriptions on both Curse and WoWI and in the options in-game - that you can filter, but there are no options for it. Reading back through comments on one of the sites seems to indicate that one or two updates ago filtering was removed, but there's no indication in the change log that this was done intentionally, and like I said, no comment from the author regarding this. Suggestion? I understand your hesitation, and clearly there is no reason to reinvent the wheel obviously, so I'm open to whatever you can suggest. I've looked through the code and there doesn't even seem to be functionality in place for filtering. I did not look through past releases for the filtering functions however. Thanks for your time.

Other errors like "Not enough mana/runic power/energy" I don't want to suppress, I only want them to be redirected to my chat frame. So, ideally, this is the feature set I want:

- The ability to redirect particular errors to different sinks, like the chat frame.
- The ability to suppress certain errors.
- The ability to do nothing to certain errors (keep them in the default UIErrorsFrame).
I can see what you're saying, but I'm hesitant. BigRed isn't meant to be an all-purpose error handling addon. Rather, it's supposed to do a very specific task - namely, organize and throttle errors. When building it, I figured that if users wanted ErrorMonster functionality, they would use ErrorMonster instead.

That said, if ErrorMonster isn't functioning, the whole "users use ErrorMonster if they want ErrorMonster" becomes rather hollow.

Have you tried contacting the author? If he's missing, I can take a look at the code myself. It seems to me like what you really want is ErrorMonster; if this is the case, I would rather get ErrorMonster running than embed inseparably it within BigRed.

What did you have in mind? The pulsing and throttling part requires fairly direct control over the frame.

If you just want to redirect error messages to, say, your chat frame, you might try pError.

/bigred opens the configuration GUI. I've been meaning to add a blizzard interface options entry, as I'm pretty sure it's a one line change.

Other than that, I'm not sure what you're asking. If you look at spec.html, you'll find the specifications for functions modifying BigRed's settings. It shouldn't be hard to write some simple options into your UI, if you're asking about integrating it in some overarching options menu.

Re: Not working /w Macaroon?

I've been extremely busy, but that was quite a helpful post. It suggests to me it's a library bug. I'll play around with it and let you know!

[e]

I'm unable to reproduce either of those issues. Can you guys please

1) zip up your WTF and Addons folders
2) email them to me at eidolarr at gmail ?

You can change the account name stuff to gibberish if you'd like. I fixed a seemingly unrelated bug with the libraries tonight with 1.8b - try it out and let me know if that solves the problem (I don't expect it to).
