Pawn  Updated this week!  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.4.1
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.4.1

WoW Classic: Hopefully fixed an error that occurred when turning in a quest.

Version 2.4

Welcome to WoW 9.0 and the level squish! Pawn had to wipe its memory of everything it knew about your characters before the squish since none of that information is correct anymore, so for a little while it might show you upgrades that aren't actually upgrades until it learns about your sweet epics. This shouldn't last long, and will automatically resolve itself as you play.
This version is meant for WoW 9.0 (Shadowlands pre-patch) and WoW Classic only.
Pawn should give reasonable gem recommendations and calculations in this version, but I'll continue to refine them in the coming days to give more helpful suggestions at lower levels.
Default stat weights have not been updated. Players participating in high-level raiding may want to import custom weights from a simulator instead of using the built-in guidance.
The Corruption stat has been removed, since it no longer has any effect on your character and appears greyed out.
Fixed a problem where if a quest gave you a useful item and a junk item (such as a gray artifact power item from Legion), Pawn would sometimes fail to show upgrade arrows on the non-junk item.

Re: Pawn suggesting Agility only sword for Monk Healspec

Hmmm, it seems reasonable to me: none of those weapons are that good for healing, so the best one out of those three for your healing spec is one with decent secondary stats and a socket. Right now Pawn is just comparing the new sword with the ones you have equipped.

1) If you want to change Pawn to try to track your best items for each spec and show you upgrades even over items you don't have equipped, you can choose the "Track for each scale (advanced)" option. It works best if you keep gear for your different specs in equipment sets, but it'll try to remember what you have no matter what.

2) If you want to hide scales from your tooltips (like the built-in Mistweaver scale, since you're using a custom one now), just shift-click the scale in the list in Pawn. (Or, select it, and then uncheck "show this scale in tooltips" on the Scales tab.)

Hi! Yeah, that's something that I definitely would like Pawn to be smarter about. Right now there unfortunately isn't a workaround other than just ignoring the false "upgrade" notices.

It's always been a problem in some fashion, but until a few years ago it was pretty much just limited to garbage green rings that you wouldn't use for long anyway, so I never got around to it. Now that items can randomly drop with sockets or bonus stats or higher item levels, it's a problem that can affect everyone even at max level.

Hi there!

Is it possible for Pawn to detect that I'm already wearing a unique-equipped ring that I have another copy of in my bags? The one I'm wearing has a socket, is the same ilevel, with the same stats. Pawn's insisting that the one in my bags is a 98% upgrade. I presume because it thinks the one in my bag is better than the *other* one I'm wearing. But I can't equip it.

Here is an album with two screenshots: first one shows the tooltip for the Smuggler's Cove ring in my bag, second one shows the Smuggler's Cove ring I have equipped.

I'll note that the one I'm wearing is also my lowest ilvl item,

Hey—are you using the Zygor addon? Pawn doesn't have a button like that, but I remember getting the same question a while back, and I don't remember for sure which addon it was.

When you're looking at the comments page, just above the top comment, is the Post Reply button. To the right of that - sometimes immediately to the right, sometimes more centered - is a Comment Options dropdown.

An option on that dropdown - usually the last on the list - is Add To Email Feed.

Hi! If you want Pawn to leave your tooltip borders alone, it's one of the first things on Pawn's Options tab. If you uncheck that option, it shouldn't conflict with your other addons that also try to change the color. (You might want to try a /reload after you change the setting if you don't see an improvement immediately.)

Does that help?

Hi! Unfortunately the green arrows that appear in your bags are actually drawn by the game and are thus a different texture. Those are the smallest ones, and I'm guessing they're the ones that you're referring to. (Pawn just influences when they show up, not the actual appearance.) So for those I don't have any suggestions I'm afraid.

UpgradeArrowBig is the one that's used on quest rewards, when loot drops, and so on. Those are rather big so I'm guessing they aren't a problem.

If you want to make the upgrade arrows that appear on tooltips larger, that's when the regular "UpgradeArrow" gets used. They're sized to be the same height as the text nearby. I *think* you can make them larger by opening up Localization.lua (or the appropriate language file if you're playing in a language other than English) and doing a search-and-replace for "UpgradeArrow:0" and changing it to, say, "UpgradeArrow:25". It'll look a little out of place but should otherwise work.

Let me know if that helps any! Unfortunately I don't have any advice on making the in-bag arrows bigger.

Hi! Right now automatic spec switching is only for Automatic mode, not Manual mode with custom scales. But I've definitely gotten the feedback that some people would like their custom weights to follow their spec as well, so that's something pretty high on the to-do list.

Larger upgrade arrow

I see a texture for a larger upgrade arrow. (UpgradeArrowBig.tga)

Looking in the PawnUI I only see reference made to UpgradeArrowBig.

I'm looking because I'd like to make the upgrade arrow even bigger. (It tends to get hidden where it's not noticeable, for example, to a young son that's reached level 120 without upgrading his legion artifact weapons, or keeping any of the weapon upgrades he's picked up along the way.) (He's upgraded every piece of armor, but not his weapons.)

Is there a way I can get a bigger uprade arrow? (Can I just resize the .tga file maybe?)
