Pawn  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.8.11
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.8.11

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for those new hit and crit stats, again. Because Blizzard broke them in a patch.

Version 2.8.10

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for the new Gnomeregan items with hit or crit to all attacks. Items with the new hit stat will receive points for your Hit and Hit (Spell) stats, and items with the new crit stat will receive points for your Crit and Crit (Spell) stats.

Version 2.8.9

Dragonflight: Updated stat weights for all classes and specs.
Dragonflight: Updated Pawn's scale color button to work with the new patch 10.2.5 color picker.

Version 2.8.8

Dragonflight: Removed the "Only show upgrades for my best armor type after level 27" option. After level 27, Pawn will now always stop showing items that are not the right type of armor for your class.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would suggest armor your character can't wear as upgrades.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would sometimes suggest socketing Glinting Flame Spessarite when it meant to suggest Sovereign Shadow Draenite. This bug potentially affected any time Glinting Flame Spessarite was suggested (such as in the socketing advisor popup), but didn't affect any other calculations or upgrade suggestions.

Version 2.8.7

Classic: Added support for the Classic trade skill and crafting window: hovering over the item icon in that window should now work the same as if the item were already in your bags.

Version 2.8.6

Dragonflight: More new stat weight updates, updated for patch 10.2.0.

Version 2.8.5

Dragonflight: New stat weights have been included for all classes and specs, including all evoker specs, based on the latest Ask Mr. Robot raid simulation data.

Version 2.8.4

To keep things responsive, especially on the slower Classic versions of the game, Pawn has a new system that caps how much processing power it will allow bag addons to use when calculating which items get green upgrade arrows. Roughly speaking, if the game runs at 60 FPS for you, Pawn will block bag addons from reducing that by more than 2 FPS. (This change doesn't affect you if you aren't using a custom bag addon.)

Version 2.8.3

Wrath Classic: The new gems for Content Phase 3 (Cardinal Ruby, etc.) will now show up in recommendations, and will be taken into account when determining the value of sockets on high-level gear.

Version 2.8.2

Dragonflight: Dragonflight 10.1.0 has a game bug that was causing Pawn to show the wrong information on "currently equipped" tooltips. That bug is fixed in Dragonflight 10.1.5. Pawn will stop annotating "currently equipped" tooltips until 10.1.5 launches.
Dragonflight: Added support for the 10.1.5 PTR.
Dragonflight: Added support for Augmentation Evokers. If you're using Pawn in Automatic mode (the default), you don't need to do anything extra. If you're using Pawn in Manual mode, you'll need to import your own Augmentation scale or use (shift-click) the one that comes with Pawn. (Stat weights for Augmentation aren't available yet so it's a placeholder in this version of Pawn.)

Version 2.8.1

Dragonflight: Fixed a problem that could occur when showing Pawn's version number on 10.1.0.

Version 2.8.0

Updated for Dragonflight: Embers of Neltharion (10.1.0).

Thanks for taking time to reply Vger. I'll make a note next time this happens, though from memory it happens with both weapons and armor, and also, though I'm using the included WoWHead feral druid scale, everything I pick up is shown as an upgrade, even items with stats such as +intellect and +spirit (where I'm expecting +agi and +stam).

Is Pawn designed to be used by level capped players? I only ask this since looking at the likes of EJ and Rawr they only seem to cater to these players (I'm a lowly level 29). I can give it a try on my 85 Mage and see what happens there.

Regards

The included Wowhead scales are all pretty up-to-date at this point. Beyond those, a lot of the popular Elitist Jerks threads (and so on) have stat weights that you can plug into Pawn for a particular spec. And, several simulators such as Rawr can generate Pawn scales for you, specifically tailored to your character's talents and current gear.

As far as the strange upgrades go, I'm guessing that you're only seeing this on weapons. Pawn tracks upgrades separately for 1H and 2H weapons, so if you don't have any 1H weapons other than perhaps a skinning knife and a trash one drops, it's shown as an upgrade to your current best 1H weapon: the skinning knife. I try to make this a little clearer with the "upgrade for 1H set" text so it's easier to tell WHAT it's an upgrade of.

If you never want to see 1H or 2H upgrades for one of your specs (for example, if you're an unholy DK who never plans on dual-wielding), you can go to the Values tab, select that scale, find a one-handed or two-handed weapon in the stats list (toward the bottom), and you should see a checkbox to never consider that size of weapon as an upgrade.

If 1H/2H doesn't sound like the situation you're running into, and can give me an example of what item you have, what scale you're using, and what trash item it says is an upgrade, I should be able to tell you what's going on.

Hope that helps!

Confused

I've only just discovered Pawn and was very interested in what it claims to be able to do. However, I can't claim to understand the scales that it uses and am having trouble finding a scale resource for Cataclysm.

What confuses me though is the cases where I loot a grey or white item and Pawn informs me that they would be an upgrade to my gear, which consists of mainly blue and green items. This is with Pawn out of the box with no custom scales loaded.

I've looked on the "un-official" Pawn forum and it seems quite un-used and out of date as far as scale resources are concerned, is there anywhere else I can go to to find up-to-date scales for all classes?

Beyond that, thanks Vger for what should be a fantastic addon once I've figured out how to use it.

The "attempt to compare number with nil" error that some people were having frequently is now fixed in Pawn 1.5.7. Sorry for the troubles!

Since 1.5.6 I often get following error at different places (bags, quest rewards, ...), with different chars and even with same items not everytime:

Message: Interface\AddOns\Pawn\Pawn.lua:2648: attempt to compare nil with number
Time: 03/13/11 09:10:19
Count: 2
Stack: Interface\AddOns\Pawn\Pawn.lua:2648: in function `PawnIsItemAnUpgrade'
/edit: Thanks, fix in 1.5.7 works.

For default weights, you may wish to consider using those provided by askmrrobot.com either instead of or in addition to those from wowhead. They are fairly well theorycrafted and/or researched from other theorycrafting sites, and cover all specs.

Otherwise, excellent addon. All the changes you've added since 4.0 have been simply stellar.

Son of a...

Damn you cogwheels; gotta make everything more complicated. I guess I need to keep a "top three" or something for cogwheels.

Thanks for the report.

Many thanks for the wonderful addon.
Being an engineer I noted today Pawn suggests me to put 2 Quick Cogwheel in my engineering headpiece, problem is the gems are Unique-Equipped thus you can't have 2 of the same kind in your gear. Would be great to fix this ^^

VgerAN has indicated on another site that the much-loved "current value" will soon make a comeback.

You can turn it back on yourself if you don't want to wait.

Pawn.lua line 121: change it to this (from "false"):

local PawnCommon_ShowEnchanted = true

Re: Re: average ilvl

I was thinking about the current vs base value change and realized there are a couple cases where it showing the current value is useful: multiple specs using similar gear.

For example, agility leather is used by both druid cat and bear sub-specs. A bear would reforge to dodge and gem stamina which would result in a lower the current value for a cat spec. A drop/quest item might have a lower base value, but when reforged would be higher than the theoretically better version.

I suspect various casters might have similar issues with subtile differences in stat weights.

I'm not necessarily advocating the current value returns - just something to consider.

Check out Pawn 1.5.5; I added the ability to calculate an average item level the way that you expect. It's in the same place as before.

Yeah, that's a common request. I'll look into making that possible once there's a way to associate a specific scale with a specific gear set, so the hit cap stuff can all be based on your gear for a specific spec, not versus what you're currently wearing. For example, I'd want the feature to work for resto shamans who occasionally DPS in enhancement spec but are in their healing gear when a mace they might want drops. Calculations for hit should be based on their enhancement gear, not their resto gear.

improvement suggestion

It would be nice, if we could set our weights to change after hitting softcaps for example, and have support for hardcaps too, where the rating will be 0 beyond that value.
Overall a great addon, using it since ages

Pawn's epic gear level number works a little differently than other displays of average item level—for items that are not epic, less than 100% of the item's level is included in the score. (I think about 91.5% for blues and 83% for greens; I don't recall the exact numbers.) Those are the numbers that I calculated based on Ulduar and Wintergrasp vehicle health scaling, which also didn't count the full item level of blues and greens, because there's a pretty big change in stats between a level 200 blue and a level 200 epic.

tl;dr: I think it's a useful number, but you can't compare it against an average item level you get from another source because it isn't calculated the same way.
