Pawn  Updated this week!  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.3.9
by: VgerAN [More]

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Language support

Pawn works with English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish (European and Latin American), Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Unlike most addons, Pawn's language has to match the language you play WoW in.

Staying in touch

For fastest assistance with Pawn, check the official thread at Curse. You can also become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot. Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (3) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Version 2.3.9

Additional updates to the Simplified Chinese translation from wolfcon.

Version 2.3.8

WoW Classic: Now supports Portuguese.
WoW Classic: Now supports Simplified Chinese, thanks to wolfcon.
Some updates to the Russian translation, courtesy of drcrazy777.

Version 2.3.7

WoW Classic: Now supports Spanish and German.

Version 2.3.6

WoW Classic: the Compare tab will now refresh itself after a moment to make sure it has the latest stats from your items.

Version 2.3.5

/pawn compare can now compare two items at once: /pawn compare left 12345 right 67890
Fixed a bug introduced in Pawn 2.3.0 that made it impossible to import a scale with a class and spec specified the first time you tried.
Fixed problems with baguette damage in French WoW.

Version 2.3.4

WoW Classic: Now supports French in addition to English.
Fixed a problem introduced in WoW 8.2.5 where Pawn wouldn't recognize numbers 1,000 or larger in the Russian version of WoW—not the same one as for French and Spanish!

Version 2.3.3

Added a new Pawn slash command: /pawn compare. You can use this as an alternate way to put items into Pawn's Compare UI. For example, "/pawn compare left 16795" puts Arcanist's Crown into the left slot of Pawn's Compare tab.
The compare command accepts item IDs, "item:12345:0:0" strings, or full shift+clicked item links ("/pawn compare [Arcanist's Crown]").
If your PC hasn't downloaded the stats for an item yet, the command might not do anything the first time. Try it again (Enter, Shift+Up, Enter) after a second and it should work the second time.
Addon authors can use "PawnUI_SetCompareItemAndShow(1, 16795)" to accomplish the same thing. (1 for left, 2 for right.)
Fixed a problem where armor was being ignored in French WoW.
WoW Classic: Worked around a problem where Pawn would sometimes not see all of the stats on an item (typically, the "green stats").
This workaround will result in slightly lower performance on WoW Classic. I'm still investigating a better long-term solution.
For the curious, it's because the game client would get a partial list of stats for the item, then Pawn would do its calculations on that, and then shortly afterward the game would get the rest of the stats for the item, but at that point Pawn didn't know that it needed to re-scan the item, so it was evaluating the item based on just the first batch of stats it got.
WoW Classic: Removed "All Resistances", which does not appear to exist on any items in Classic.
WoW Classic: Added support for "of Concentration" items.
Russian and Chinese: For consistency, Pawn's "debug" and "backup" slash commands are now always in English like they are for all other languages.

Version 2.3.2

Fixed a problem introduced in WoW 8.2.5 where Pawn wouldn't recognize numbers 1,000 or larger in the French and European Spanish versions of WoW.
I introduced a system that will make Pawn a little easier to translate in the future, and make it more resilient to changes in the way that non-English versions of WoW display numbers.
WoW Classic: Added support for ranged weapon DPS, "of Defense" items, and probably more stuff I forgot about.

Version 2.3.1

WoW Classic: Added support for "of Eluding" items.

Version 2.3

Consider this version a full release for Battle for Azeroth and a beta for WoW Classic. WoW Classic is supported for English only in this version. Pawn does not include any built-in scales for WoW Classic, so you'll need to create your own scales from scratch, or import them. Not all Pawn features exist on WoW Classic, and some features are incomplete.

There are no new features for Battle for Azeroth in this version. If you run into any issues on the live/retail realms, you can return to 2.2.x and shouldn't miss out on anything.
The "show item level upgrades" feature will default to OFF in Classic. (But, if you've already used one of the earlier versions of Pawn on Classic, that option may already be on, so turn it off manually if you don't want it.)

Removing the option to have Pawn track both DW and 2H weapon upgrades. My understanding is that in Legion, there won't be any specs that are designed to work with both options except casters, and that's only through level 100. I believe we're getting our artifact weapons right at the beginning of Legion—there won't be any further weapon drops or quest rewards once you leave Draenor.

Making sure that your best two-handed weapon is in an equipment set can help. Beyond that, there probably isn't much I can suggest. I will probably be removing that option in the next major version of Pawn since it won't be relevant anymore when Legion hits (since everyone will be using their artifacts).

Sorry!
Hmm. Removing which option? And I haven't been following the buzz about Legion that hard, but will people have artifacts from the very beginning? I had thought (perhaps wrongly) that it was something we had to work up to.

Weird recommendations?

I got a low-level item in the salvage yard, and noticed that it claimed to be an upgrade. Now, it's a 2 handed weapon, and I'm currently wielding 2 one handers, but I've wielded better 2 handers since the last time I tried to reset the values. Here are two screenshots, one showing the upgrade (and what I'm currently using) and one showing my settings.

What am I doing wrong?

Ah, very nice feature - once you know about it
Handy to be able to turn it off for a recently dinged alt without upgrade resources.

Thank you for replying.

Hi! In the current versions, Pawn will assume that you're going to upgrade any Baleful gear you get using Empowered Apexis Fragments to turn it to level 695, so it always compares with that version in mind. (Similarly, it assumes that you'll either upgrade new items with Valor.) If you don't want Pawn to assume that you'll upgrade items, you can check the "ignore Valor and Baleful upgrades" option on the Options tab, and then it will behave like previous versions.

Hope that helps!

Uses stats for purple version, not my actual gear

I've switched back to 1.9.20 (my previous downloaded version) instead of the current 1.9.24.

I'm an Unholy Death Knight with standard settings. I couldn't understand why Pawn wasn't showing the purple lvl 665 Felbane Greaves of the Peerless as an upgrade for equipped blue ilvl 650 Felbane Greaves of the Merciless. Using the Compare tab on my two items showed me why (?): Pawn 1.9.24 seems to be using the values for a purple version of the blue boots too. Going back to 1.9.20 fixed the issue.

PS Thank you for this add-on. It takes the brain worry out of comparing gear

Thanks! That did it. I needed to add the same hack to SetQuestLogItem, but now things seem to be working correctly. Much appreciated! (Also, much appreciated for your work in pioneering compact raid frames. )

GameTooltip:GetItem() is currently bugged when the item was set via SetQuestItem; it returns an empty string for the item name, and an item link with no name an and ID of 0 (eg. "", "|Hitem:0:0:0:0...|h[]|h"). As a workaround to let me see Pawn values on quest reward choices, I modified the SetQuestItem hook in Pawn.lua (line 224) to look like this:
Code:
	hooksecurefunc(GameTooltip, "SetQuestItem", function(self, ...)
		local ItemLink = GetQuestItemLink(...)
		if ItemLink then
			PawnUpdateTooltip("GameTooltip", "SetHyperlink", ItemLink)
		end
	end)
I also added a new hook for the SetHyperlink method of the WorldMapTooltip, so I can see Pawn values in the tooltips from addons like HandyNotes_DraenorTreasures that add item icons to the world map:
Code:
	hooksecurefunc(WorldMapTooltip, "SetHyperlink", function(self, ...) PawnUpdateTooltip("WorldMapTooltip", "SetHyperlink", ...) end)
Finally, I got tired of seeing "upgrade!" in tooltips for items I can't actually equip, so I added some code in the PawnGetStatsFromTooltip function to stop if it finds any red text on a line that has both left and right text (eg. "Waist .... Cloth" or "Ranged ... Crossbow"). There may be some cases where this won't work, and it might be more efficient to do this by looking at the return values from GetItemInfo instead, but I haven't noticed any issues in my normal gameplay.
Code:
		for Side = 1, 2 do
			-- <snip>
			else
				local RightLine = _G[TooltipName .. "TextRight" .. i]
				CurrentParseText = RightLine:GetText()
				if (not CurrentParseText) or (CurrentParseText == "") then break end
				RegexTable = PawnRightHandRegexes
				CurrentDebugMessages = false
				IgnoreErrors = true

				local r, g, b = RightLine:GetTextColor()
				if r > 0.98 and g < 0.13 and b < 0.13 then -- red: 0.99999779462814, 0.12548992037773, 0.12548992037773
					return
				end
				r, g, b = LeftLine:GetTextColor()
				if r > 0.98 and g < 0.13 and b < 0.13 then
					return
				end
			end
Feel free to incorporate any/all of these changes in the official version.

Re: incompatibility?

Hi! Yes, Pawn is not currently compatible with Italian WoW. Translating Pawn is quite a lot of work, but if you don't mind some tedious trial and error, you can find out more about what it takes here:

The other likely case is for quest rewards. If your game client hasn't gotten the name and stats of an item from the server by the time that it shows up on-screen, then Pawn won't be able to add the green arrow icon on top of it. If you don't see the arrow on a quest reward, but then when you hover over it and the tooltip has a green border and does have an icon on it, then that's what happened. (In that particular case, Pawn won't show any icons on any of the rewards if one of them wasn't downloaded in time, to make sure it doesn't give the wrong suggestion.)

Hi! Yes, there's a bug in which the Garrison Resources chest will show the upgrade arrow when you loot it IF the last thing that you won (where "won" means anything that showed the "you won!" popup) was an upgrade.

For now, whenever it happens, just imagine that you got some Complicated Wood instead of Simple Wood that will get used in your upgraded building. Exciting!
