Pawn  Updated less than 3 days ago!  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.9.11
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.9.11

Cataclysm Classic: More updates to correctly read numbers larger than 999 on items when playing in French.

Version 2.9.10

Cataclysm Classic: Fixed a problem where the default stat weights for expertise were incorrect for all classes and specs.

Version 2.9.9

Cataclysm Classic: Fixed a problem where certain items with mastery and certain haste enchantments had those stats ignored when playing in Russian, European Spanish, and Latin American Spanish.
You can now click an item link in chat and then Alt+LeftClick the popup that appears to get a window that lets you copy all of the text on that item to the clipboard. (This is mostly only useful to me when I need to type Искусность but my keyboard doesn't have those letters.) Previously this feature only worked on Pawn's Compare tab.

Version 2.9.8

Fixed a problem introduced in Pawn 2.9.7 that caused the "Show icons next to tooltips" feature to cause an error. (Actually, Ulidan did. Thanks Ulidan and Kraturnus!)
Cataclysm Classic: Ranged Attack Power no longer appears as a distinct stat you can give a weight to; just use Attack Power for both melee and ranged.
Cataclysm Classic: Updated the default stat weights for retribution paladins.

Version 2.9.7

The War Within: Pawn now works on The War Within beta and WoW 11.0.
Mists of Pandaria Remix: Fixed another case where the socketing advisor could appear and give dubious advice.

Version 2.9.6

Mists of Pandaria Remix: Pawn's socketing advisor is now disabled in this mode, since gems work differently.
Cataclysm Classic: Updated default stat weights for all specs and classes are included, thanks to the WoWSims team. Simulations are still in their early stages, so expect some oddities—let me know if you find something egregiously wrong. Simulating your character with WoWSims (or any other favorite sim) will get you the most accurate results, and you can export custom stat weights to use in Pawn for quick in-game advice.
Cataclysm Classic: You can now set a weight for the non-stat effect of meta gems like you could in Burning Crusade Classic and Wrath Classic.
Cataclysm Classic: The deprecated stats Defense Rating and Block Value will no longer show up in Pawn.
Classic Era and Season of Discovery: Fixed a harmless error message about gem data.

Version 2.9.5

Fixed some problems introduced in Pawn 2.9.4 where Pawn could give you an error when socketing an item.
Cataclysm Classic: Added support for the armor specialization skills such as Mail Specialization.

Version 2.9.4

Cataclysm Classic: Cogwheel sockets on engineering goggles will now be considered in the item's value like any other gem socket.
Cataclysm Classic: Fixed a bug that caused gems with bad secondary stats to be valued more highly than they should have been (it was calculating things as if you could reforge the gem's bad stat into something better). The bug shouldn't have affected the values of existing items unless you were using gems that are bad for your spec.

Version 2.9.3

Cataclysm Classic: Fixed a problem where the "track for each scale (advanced)" option could cause an error.
Cataclysm Classic: Pawn will no longer display a warning when logging in if you play in French.

Version 2.9.2

Cataclysm Classic: When visiting an Arcane Reforger, Pawn will now display advice on how to reforge the item to maximize its power. (You can turn this off with the "show reforge advisor" option.)
Cataclysm Classic: Pawn's Compare tab will now show you how much an item's score can be improved by reforging it (assuming you make the change that Pawn suggests).
Cataclysm Classic: Pawn will now take reforging into account when determining an item's score and whether or not it's an upgrade.

Version 2.9.1

Cataclysm Classic: Pawn will now recommend the proper gems based on the new colors and stats of existing gems.
Cataclysm Classic: Fixed a bug that caused a few stat weights to get reset to 0 when editing in the Weights tab and then reloading.
Cataclysm Classic: Added support for all of the new Cataclysm gems, which Pawn will start recommending as you get Cataclysm gear.
Fixed a bug that caused gems to always appear as upgrades.

Version 2.9.0

Cataclysm Classic: Added basic support for Cataclysm Classic. The following important work is not yet done:
Updated stat weights (if you know of a good source, please let me know!)
Reforging support
I'm not playing Classic, so I'll need your help pointing out remaining things that are broken!

I looked into using some of the existing tooltip-reading mods at one point and gave up on it; they didn't do what Pawn requires, unfortunately.

German version is no longer maintained.

However LibStatLogic-1.1 (used by RatingBuster for example) is compatible to main languages and updated on every patch and (AFAIK) does that what you are doing with your english-only parsing but for more languages. Is there a chance that you switch to it?
Because RatingBuster is deDE-compatible but Pawn has different versions for all languages which have a different state and/or are no longer maintained

1. Yes, if armor penetration rating isn't being found on items, it would be a localization issue. The English version of Pawn had a bug in 1.1.9 where some armor penetration rating was missed, so possibly the German version has the same problem. (Please give the person maintaining the German version a specific item to check when you report the problem, or they might not see it themselves.)

2. I'm not sure I quite understand how you have things set up, but maybe the 1.8 points is due to a socket bonus that's being counted? Items with empty sockets will have the socket bonus included in their value unless the item would gain more points by using a different color of gems.

I do have two Problem with Pawn (german)
1: Most of the Armorpenetrationrting arent included to itemvalue calculation, I assume this may be due to localisation issues
2: I have three sets to better comprehend items: one with full values, one without hit and one without hit and without yellow sockets.
but if i look at items with a yellow socket, the "nor yellow profile" has the same value as the "no hit" profile or just 1,8 points less, although the yellow socket is weightes with 16 points.

If your socket values are set to the value of the best gem of that color, then comparing unenchanted values is fine. The only real exception I can come up with where that's not the case is if your existing item is socketed improperly (such as for a different spec). Do you have a specific example?

Re: Outfitter Tooltips

I really like Pawn except for one thing : would it be possible to add an option to compute the enchanted value assuming the enchant is the one on the equipped item ?
What I do in general to compare a drop with something I already have is equip the piece I want to compare it with (which is already gemmed / enchanted) and compare the two values, right now none of the two options for enchant / unenchant are satisfactory :
- Unenchanted value does not take gem slotting differences into account
- Enchanted value does not take the drop possible enchant into account

Either add a new option (might be a bit overwhelming), or change enchanted value so that it assumes for an unenchanted items that enchantis the one we have equipped.

Thanks for the suggestion—I do plan to either add suggested gem information to the socket window, or a separate tab in Pawn, to make this easier.

Socket bonus

Would it be possible to have it showing if the value presented is actually through gemming for the socket bonus or through "best gems"?

Say for example that I value a red gem as 10pt and a blue gem 5pt. There's a blue socket with a socket bonus worth 2pt, which means best gemming would be to not go for the socket bonus, but instead using a red gem.

Not sure how I would have that marked... I know it's possible to see after you actually gemmed, but that's kinda late in the process.

Wonderful addon otherwise, I wouldn't be able to manage without it!

Re: gems

Sorry, I don't understand what you're saying. Your red socket value should be the value of the best red/orange/purple gem that you typically use. Your yellow socket value should be the value of the best yellow/orange/green gem that you typically use, and so forth. Pawn will automatically deal with socket bonuses, counting them if you could use the correct gem colors to maximize the value, or ignoring them if you could use only your best gem color to maximize the value.

gems

I have a slightly different problem with the gems...
They don't show at all... I would provide a screenshot of this problem but this idiot website doesn't allow for JPG attachements to posts, only links to images hosted on other websites.

Now that we have Dual Spec, it's not correct to assume a set value just because there is a socket. I would actually need to compare the gems in there to and have their specific stats added to the sum up instead.
Example:

Maximum Stamina I've seen on a gem is 24.
Maximum strength I've seen on a gem is 12
Agility 16

The simple truth is that if a socketed item had more then 12 strength on its base value, but no socket. My item would then be reported as better because it has a socket... And I would pass on the roll, missing out on a potential upgrade.

Is there a default value calculated or how does it work?

I guess i do some wrong thinking and missed to activate an option or something like that.

Thanks for helping!
Pawn is behaving as expected. If you set your socket values correctly like you did, and then use the best gem for the socket, the value won't change. This sounds weird at first, but it makes some sense—when you got that item you already knew you were going to put the best gem in that slot, so to compare its value fairly with an unsocketed item, that gem's value is added to the score even though it's not there yet.

If you would have socketed an inferior gem (like something with MP5, or a green-quality gem), then the value would have gone down.

I'd like to make it possible to compare two weapons or a weapon/shield or a weapon/offhand versus a 2H weapon in the future, but right now there's no way to do it besides just adding up the values and doing head math.

You're right that weapon speed is irrelevant in cat form; it's automatically adjusted to 1.0.

Dual Wield vs Two Handed

I think it was mentioned somewhere in the in-game info but I don't see this built in yet. Or maybe I have missed activating something?
Thing is I have a few characters that occasionally need to compare 2 handed weapons with one handed dual wield combos as well as two or more different combinations with dual wielding on both sides of the compare feature.
Is this something that might be available? I'm guessing this only requires some simple adding up of stats on the one handed weapons altho there is the thing about DPS, especially if comparing warriors titan grip on 2 handed weapons where Haste and critical hit for the offhand might be tricky to calculate since several classes such as rogues and DK's have talents that increase the off-hand damage. As for Feral druids, I have one of those also and the speed of a weapon seems to have no affect at all on them at least in cat form. I could be wrong tho, but I noticed I have a staff with 3.80 speed to druid but in cat form, the attack speed is reduced to a base of 1.00 for some reason. The damage output reported on the 'melee' window of character sheet doesn't make much sense to me when looking at the weapon itself either.
