Personal Sentry  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 1.54b
by: Rexxa [More]

What does Personal Sentry do?

Short answer:

It creates a popup menu of Players/NPC's by using your combat log, mouse-over, and/or minimap. You can 'left-click' the buttons to target or 'right-click' to target AND announce their position to a specified channel.

More detailed answer:

By using 'Sentry Mode' you will get enemy player targets to appear on the popup automatically if they do anything near enough to you that your combat log reports it. Also, the popup does more than just allow you to target and announce things. It can keep track of targets over time and adjust the background color fade to let you know which is more recently active (darker is higher priority). It removes dead targets (optional) and adds new targets as they appear. It will also update targetted and moused-over targets health (shown by how filled the colored bar is). It can keep track of all damage taken from enemies and you can also add enemy player targets to your own 'Hit List', which will give you extra warning if they appear on your popup.

LeoLeal,

I only wish I could make that possible. Unfortunately, with my limited XML knowledge I don't know of a way to do this. If there is a way to force frames to draw from right-to-left instead of let-to-right then someone please let me know and I will certainly make this happen.

If I was going to tie in anything from cartographer though, it'd be the 'way x,y' function for potential datasharing. If you haven't treid it yet then when you get in game next time type '/way 50,50' and you'll'll get an arrow above your head pointing you directly towards the coordinates, plus a waypoint marker on your cartographer map! It's the greatest thing since sliced cheese!
That is pretty cool! Perhaps then if a fellow PS user sends a report, you can click an icon next to the enemy player bar and it will pop up the Waypoint arrow?

ps. I totally agree. It boggles my mind that people are playing on a PvP server and have not even installed a simple co-ordinate mod?! I really need to make a macro that just prints this web address every time someone asks me that damn question

The number one complaint I get when using any type of Sentry program is from non mod users asking "Where's that? I don't have co-ordinates." So I've a couple of ideas that I think would make this more useful to our mod-challenged allies.

1) Would it be possible to grab two locations from an enemy, a little time apart, and based on the logs / targeting info and come up with a rudimentary heading for them? I think some simple code detecting if they have moved away from you by a certain distance between the 1st and 2nd time their position is noted, then you can add a compass heading to the report. If on the other hand, they've gotten closer or not moved enough, no heading.

2) It would be nice to have more descriptive names for locations, making it easier for non co-ordinate people to get use from reports. How about tying into Cartographer and looking for map-notes near an enemy position? You could create a Cartographer icon plugin that you can look for, and if it finds it, it uses the description and distance from it, instead of a raw co-ordinate.

So if both these things could be implemented a report would read more like this

"Warning! Enemy Player Drokk (58 Undead Warrior) in Goldshire, 214 NW of Melon Farm, Heading East!"

"Melon Farm" would be a player defined Cartographer label, and the Sentry could figure out the rest

It would be up to the player to decide how many labels to add to a region, the more added the more descriptive locations reports would become.
Sentry would be given a radius to check for a custom label, and if it did not find one near enough, would revert to co-ordinates.
You could also add an option to always show co-ordinates or not if a label is present instead.

Just a few ideas I had banging in my brain every time I heard "Where's that?"

I initially based this addon on ICU, but later turned it into a combination of ICU and Combat Sentry Gizmo. The resources are minimal so you need not worry there.

As for the graphics, well, I'm still learning WoW XML so you'll have to bear with me until I'm able to figure out how to make more dynamic buttons/layouts. I do intend to eventually give it a better overall appearance when I can.

1.15 is now released. This should address all the known bug issues from 1.14. Thanks to all who submitted bug reports!

Re: Re: Re: Re: PvP

Lots of fun stuff coming soon (no later than Sunday night!) I've been having fun testing out the new 'HITLIST' functionality. All seems to be good so far, just have to run through a bunch of BG's today to be sure nothing weird happens and you'll all get to check it out!

Set the option to 'Enemy Players' and that is all you will ever get on the popup =)

If by PvP targets you mean Players, then yes. Just set the Tracking/Mouseover setting to "Players" and that will do it.

Thanks!

Couple questions:

Can you make it so the mod isn't "always on top" ? It's real annoying to have it block out my bags or other UI elements all the time.

and then finally, can you add 'All but Dungeons' maybe to the Addon Toggle tab? Where it would auto-disable the sentry within a dungeon?

Thanks again for the great mod!

Thanks to both of you! You'll be happy to know that for the next release I've already set the popup so it won't cover bags/buttons on the interface. I'm sure there is a way to determine instances from normal zones... once I discover how to do that I can certainly add the option to disable it for instances.
