PhanxChat  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 8.0.0.1
by: Phanx, Akkorian

I am no longer developing or maintaining World of Warcraft addons. I haven't played in years, and don't have the time or interest to continue working on addons for a game I don't play anymore. If you are an addon author interested in continuing one of my addons, please see https://phanx.net/addons/. If you are an addon user, sorry, but there won't be any more fixes or updates from me.
Removes chat frame clutter and adds some functionality.

Features
  • Shortens chat channel names
  • Shortens cross-realm character names and Real ID player names
  • Replaces Real ID player names and BattleTags with WoW character names
  • Enables arrow keys without the Alt key (*)
  • Enables resizing chat frames by their edges
  • Makes all channels sticky (**)
  • Makes URLs clickable for easy copying
  • Moves the input box above the chat frame
  • Sets the delay time for chat text fading
  • Stops docked chat tabs from being dragged
  • Hides the scroll, menu, and social buttons
  • Hides extra textures on chat frames
  • Hides the flashing effect on chat tabs
  • Hides channel notification messages
  • Hides repeated messages in public channels
  • Enables class colored names in all channels with a single click
  • Changes the text size in all chat frames from a single control
(*) As of Patch 5.4 using Up/Down to access previously entered chat lines without the Alt key is limited to non-secure commands only. If you need to access previously entered secure commands (like /cast or /use) you will still need to hold the Alt key.

(**) If a channel is sticky, then after talking in that channel, the chat input box will open to the same chat type again, rather than making you type “/g” or “/ra” again.
Options & Commands
  • Type “/pchat” for options, or find them in the Interface Options.
  • Type “/clear” or “/clearchat” to clear all visible chat windows.
  • Type “/clear all” or “/clearchat all” to clear all chat windows.
  • Type “/tt" or “/wt” to send a whisper to your current target.
Some additional options, such as customizing which channels are made sticky and what abbreviations are used for channel names, are available by editing the Core.lua file in a plain-text editor such as Notepad. If you break something, download a fresh copy and try again.

Please DO NOT send me PMs asking for help, reporting bugs, or requesting features. To report a bug or suggest a feature, see the instructions below. To get help, post a comment. I read and respond to every ticket and comment!
Language Support
Works in all languages. Translated into English, Deutsch, Espańol, Français, Portuguęs, Русский, 한국어, 简体中文, and 繁體中文 (partial). Add or update translations for any locale on CurseForge!
Feedback
Post a ticket or comment. If you are reporting a bug, please include directions I can follow to reproduce the bug, whether it still happens when all other addons are disabled, and the exact text of the related error message (if any) from Bugger.

The following features will never be added to PhanxChat, and requests for them will be deleted, so please just don't bother posting such requests:

  • The "Replace real names" option will continue to replace both Real ID names and BattleTags with character names.

Version 3.3.5.94

Due to file changes, you should completely uninstall your existing copy of the addon before installing this version. Removing your old saved variables is recommended, but not required.
  • Added a Shorten Player Names feature, which shortens player names by removing realm names from cross-realm players and last names from Real ID players.
  • Removed the Auto Start Chat Log feature, because I never used it.
  • Removed the Color Player Names feature, because it was just too much code and performance overhead to color the very few types of messages that the default UI doesn't already color, and also confused all the people who never read patch notes or change logs.
  • Translations are needed for all locales.
  • All existing translations for the configuration UI have been discarded, since none of them had been updated since the transition from slash commands to a GUI over a year ago. If you can provide translations for any locale, please send me a PM.
  • Additionally, several chat channels are currently only shortened in English locales, because nobody has provided translations for them. If you see a channel name that isn't shortened, please post a bug report ticket with your locale (eg. "German" or "deDE"), the English name of the channel (eg. "General"), the localized name of the channel (eg. "Allgemein"), and an appropriate short form for your locale (eg. "A").

  • Fixed a bug relating to sticky channel selection

Version 3.3.5.72
  • Updated for patch 3.3.5. NOT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE.
  • Added an “Enable resize edges” option to add resize controls along all edges of chat frames, and remove the bottom-left-corner resize arrow. This basically just restores pre-3.3.5 chat frame resizing functionality.
  • Added a “Hide extra textures” option to hide the extra textures on chat tabs and chat edit boxes added in patch 3.3.5.
  • Removed the “Enable mousewheel scrolling” option, since this functionality is now provided by the default UI.
  • Modified the default UI's mousewheel scrolling to scroll more lines at a time, page up/down on ctrl, and top/bottom on shift.
  • Fixed a bug preventing custom short channel name formats from using the channel name in addition to the channel number.
  • Translations are needed for the new options in all locales. Also, major revisions are needed for several locales. If you can assist with translations for any locale, please send me a PM.

Please read the "Have a feature request?" section in the addon description above.

Timestamps have already been requested many times, and I have declined to add them just as many times. My view on timestamps is that they are worthless clutter, and my entire motivation for writing this addon is to add functionality while reducing clutter in the chat frame. As such, I will never add timestamps to my addon. There is a link in the description above to a standalone timestamp addon that will run just fine alongside my addon, and I'm sure there are other timestamp addons available if you look for them.

Uploaded version 20100-r07. This version changes the method for getting player classes from short who query results, so you will now get class colors for shift-clicked Blood Elves and Night Elves. It should also fix the issues with names containing special characters. I've actually had this fixed for about a week, just hadn't gotten around to uploading it. >_>

Hmm. Well, "Night Elf" is the problem, since the pattern is searching for a number (the level) followed by a single word (race) followed by one more single word (class), and since "Elf" is not a class, it's not coloring that name. I don't play Alliance, but it's probably an issue with blood elves as well. I really haven't spent a lot of time testing everything, so it's quite possible I've never shift-clicked an elf. :P

The guy who's not a night elf, I have no idea. The special character shouldn't pose a problem, since other names with special characters are being colored fine... I'll try to find someone with an accented O in their name to test on.

In-game right now as I type this, this all coming from trade chat in Shat, I found 5 so far that did not colour properly:

Cutthemdown: Level 70 Night Elf Priest - Ironforge
Celore: Level 70 Night Elf Hunter <I N A C T I V E> - Shattrath City
Victory: Level 39 Draenei Paladin <Carpe Noctum> - Ironforge (On his name the "O" had a symbol, as well as the "e" in Carpe)
Shadowslayer: Level 70 Night Elf Hunter <Dark Rebellions> - Darnassus
Slyvin: Level 56 Night Elf Hunter <Dark Hour> - Stormwind City

Btw sorry if my comment reporting what exactly I meant with the bug seemed a bit smart ass or ungrateful. I appreciate yer work and I now use Phanx Chat, it's the perfect mod for me.

HOWEVER

""Anyway, r06 changes the search pattern for short who queries to be less specific""

Any way you could make it even more specific?

I downloaded and tested revision 06. Seemed to work fine...almost. I discovered that some names did not colour themselves when shift click. I'd say this would occur 1 out of 10 names give or take.

Oops. Uploading a repack now with the lib entires in the TOC. I delete them in my personal working copy, since having nonexistent files in the TOC adds to load time and fills up the FrameXML error log, and put that in the zip instead of the public release copy.

Anyway, r06 changes the search pattern for short who queries to be less specific (this should fix your problem Jackalantern), and adds an extra check to prevent errors when validating items in AtlasLoot. I need to dig through the AL code and see why this is happening in the first place, but for now this will work.

Might want to readd the Ace2 libraries to the .toc file -- this is the only Ace addon I use and the libs never get loaded. Just a note The .toc file from the last RC works beautifully.

Keep up the great work! This addon is everything I need for my chat window.

I can confirm this does not work. But maybe you misunderstood me or maybe you just don't know, so I will try to make it more clear.

Example:

Step 1. Jackalantern types a sentence in Trade Chat to sell something.

Step 2. Random "Phanx Chat" user wants to know what class Jackalantern is and have his name coloured and stored in the database, this user shift-clicks Jackalantern's name in his chat window to do that.

Step 3. Random "Phanx Chat" user notices that a couple seconds after he shift clicks Jackalantern's name that his name is not coloured at all when Jackalantern types his second sentence in trade chat.

- Conclusion: It does not work, I am using the English Client, and it is in the format you posted. Why it does not work I do not know, I am not a coder. However I do know that other chat mods such as "Prat" does work in this manor. Also, even if you go into the actual "Who" tab and click on Jackalantern's name it will still not be coloured the next time he makes a message, for anything to be coloured with this mod you either have to A) Directly click on them B) Have them on your friends or guild list. - that means if I want a strangers name who is a world away to be coloured I have to /who them and add them to my friends list, then remove for it to be coloured.

I completely understand that you wouldn't want to update to too many places, was just curious, an I certainly use addons that are not Aced and take full advantage of the email notify of this site. For me, the more addons I can update through WAU the better, but just because an addon doesn't use that, wont stop me from enjoying it

It's not available from files.wowace.com because it isn't hosted on the Wowace SVN. I have several reasons for choosing not to host it on Wowace.

First, I already have three places to upload it any time I make a change or fix a bug, and I'd rather not add a fourth, especially since posting it on Wowace would require me to download, install, and learn to use SVN client software, rather than simply filling in a form in my web browser. Far more work than I want to do just to make it more work to release updates!

Second, I don't want other people making changes or additions to my code, and if it's on the SVN, other addon authors or maintainers have open access to do whatever they want to the code, while that code stays part of my addon, with my name on it, even though I may not approve of or even know about what they've done to it. Sure, I could ask the SVN administrators to lock it so that I only I can make changes, but again, it's a lot more effort than should be needed, and more than I'm willing to expend just to making releasing updates more work.

Third, I like the fact that people can't update my addon through WAU. WAU is great and wonderful, yes, and I use it myself, but it has the unfortunate effect of being so easy to use that it ends up reinforcing the "Ace is better" misconception. The more people who use only addons they can update through WAU, the more people who are using only Ace addons, and the more people who are missing out on all the other great addons out there. I've seen many, many forum threads -- on this site, on Wowace, and on other sites -- where people have listed a bunch of addons and said "I want to get rid of these, what are Ace alternatives?". These kinds of posts are extremely ignorant, and many times the lists include addons that already use Ace libraries (including PhanxChat) simply because the poster assumes that all Ace addons are on Wowace, and that all addons not on Wowace don't use Ace. Not only is this assumption wrong, it's also wrong to think that simply because an addon uses Ace, it's automatically better than an addon that doesn't use Ace. The purpose of Ace is to make it easier, faster, and more efficient for authors to develop addons. The inclusion of exclusion of Ace -- or any other library -- in an addon shouldn't even be a consideration for users. If it works for you, use it, if it doesn't, use something else. The building blocks of an addon are not nearly as important as the construction -- i.e. how well the author coded it. You can have poorly written addons using Ace libraries, and well written addons not using Ace libraries.

In closing, turn on email notification for favorites updates, and it's less work for you to download it from WoWInterface than it would be for me to keep it updated on Wowace. Also, PhanxChat may not use Ace libraries forever, and most of the other addons I maintain don't use Ace libraries. It's also about 1000x easier to keep track of comments, bug reports, and feature requests on a site like WoWInterface than it is to track those things in a forum thread on Wowace, which is where they'd all go if it was available for download there.
