VirtualPlates  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 3.3.5.3
by: Saiket [More]

Nameplates are hard to look at. They fill your screen and make an absolute mess when you're fighting lots of mobs. _VirtualPlates gives them depth, so they fit into the game world instead of covering it.

Note: _VirtualPlates no longer works since the Cataclysm pre-release 4.0.1 patch.
Details

This has little configuration, and should work with most other nameplate skinning mods such as Aloft, TidyPlates, and caelNameplates. You might prefer to turn on Allow Overlapping Unit Nameplates in Interface Options > Names > Unit Nameplates so nameplates won't bump into each other. The sample screenshots were taken with this new feature enabled.

Options

_VirtualPlates' options can be found in the Interface Options > _VirtualPlates menu.
  • Nameplate Scale Limits:
    • Minimum Scale: Limits how small nameplates can shrink to. Values can range from 0 (meaning disabled) to 1 (meaning plates won't get smaller than their default size). For example, a value of 0.5 would keep plates from shrinking beyond half their original size.
    • Limit maximum scale: When enabled, this prevents nameplates from getting too big when they get close to your camera.
    • Maximum Scale: Similar to the “Minimum Scale” slider, but this value controls how many times larger than the default size a nameplate can grow to.
  • Scale Factor: When nameplates are this many yards from the screen, they'll be normal sized. Larger distances mean larger nameplates.

  • 3.3.5.3:
    • Final release. _VirtualPlates will no longer work after the Cataclysm expansion.
    • Added deDE localization by muhmiauwau from CurseForge.
  • 3.3.5.2:
  • 3.3.5.1: Removed options to adjust scale factors based on camera zoom, since camera info is no longer available to addons.
  • 3.3.0.1:
    • Hack workaround for blacklisted nameplate depths.
    • No longer forces overlapping nameplates feature on.
    • OnUpdate script handlers on plate Visuals now get assigned to the plates directly to preserve their execution order.
  • 3.2.2.5:
    • Fixed issue where addons could get a hold of raw nameplates before _VirtualPlates replaced them.
    • Reworked handling of frame levels. _VirtualPlates shouldn't interfere with the relative frame levels of children any more.
  • 3.2.2.4: Added a Maximum Scale option.
  • 3.2.2.3: Now loads LibCamera-1.0 properly.
  • 3.2.2.2:
    • Added a configuration pane with various options.
    • ScaleFactor can now optionally scale with camera distance.
    • Added a minimum scale option to prevent plates from getting too small at long range.
  • 3.2.2.1: Initial commit.

I don't normally play with that feature enabled, but I just tried it and can't get it to work... No matter what. Even with no addons enabled on a new character, my camera won't swivel behind my character when I move.

well with virtualplates this aint happening so if i run forward im still looking at left/rigt/whichever side i was looking before i pressed forward

hope this makes some sense

If all you're seeing is text, perhaps all nameplates got disabled? The default keybinding to turn them all on or off is "Shift+V", I think, so that might be worth a try.
I had tried that, thinking it was the problem - and it wasn't the problem. So it seems no matter what I do (out of the knowledge I know of what I can do) doesn't work to fix this problem. I don't know what else to do. My brain can't comprehend...

I tried using it alone and it's not working either. I never really noticed it before till now... cause I didn't really have the time to test it out.

Above the NPC's/players or whatever I'm viewing on the screen, it just says their name above their head, in YELLOW text, that's it that's all, nothing else shows, and they don't seem to look further away than another or anything like Virtual Plates are suppose to. Not sure why... I hope you can help me get it workin' right.

I'll try the code swap in the LUA for atrNameplates like you told me.

agreed, incorporating this into Aloft is not necessary. looks like your addon is fully compatible.

wish there was some way to sense the current/active value of the "zoom" or "follow distance", so that nameplates could scale relative to the placement of the character model rather than the placement of the camera. i tend to play zoomed way out (generally 50 yards, which i guess is the maximum), for a large field of view, and target nameplates end up somewhat small even at melee range.

perhaps i will play (at the LUA level) with carrying the "scale factor" all the way out to 50 yards...

edit: aha, no need to roll this into Aloft. looks like you are already compatible, just hook in underneath the covers. that is a better solution, i think. i am working on a FAQ post for Aloft that will link to "other" nameplate addons; i will make sure this gets mentioned (and i will also start running it myself to make sure Aloft remains compatible).

wow. i had no idea this exists, and i would not have believed it would be possible to begin with.

how offensive would it be to you if i "reverse engineered" this, and added this capability to Aloft?

Great - but no guarantee they'll ever update. Seeing as how the author has been absent from this website for quite some time, and if it don't get updated - I might never get to use those graphics for name plates. But I could accept a new one if someone would make one, that goes with Spartan UI.

See I use Spartan UI, and I am combining several addons to style everything, literally everything, and a few extras to share with others - because I like Spartan UI, but I like everything to match.

If I do this, I don't plan on submitting the version of Spartan UI that I have - because only Ansu updates and his updates are sure to work and I don't want people to think they have to have a certain version to use all the compiled addons that I use with it. But I don't even know yet for sure if I'll even release that info. But I might atleast blog about it, and provide a link to each thing, and put the link on my profile here to my blog.

I just want a Nameplates graphic replacement addon, that matches SUI, that works with Virtual Plates more than just that addon in particular, ya know what I mean?

And by the way - _VirtualPlates isn't working anymore, and I can't figure out why it just shows yellow words of the NPC's names above their heads, instead of how it should look... I tried that fix, and I think I did it wrong, because nothing is working.
