VirtualPlates  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 3.3.5.3
by: Saiket [More]

Nameplates are hard to look at. They fill your screen and make an absolute mess when you're fighting lots of mobs. _VirtualPlates gives them depth, so they fit into the game world instead of covering it.

Note: _VirtualPlates no longer works since the Cataclysm pre-release 4.0.1 patch.
Details

This has little configuration, and should work with most other nameplate skinning mods such as Aloft, TidyPlates, and caelNameplates. You might prefer to turn on Allow Overlapping Unit Nameplates in Interface Options > Names > Unit Nameplates so nameplates won't bump into each other. The sample screenshots were taken with this new feature enabled.

Options

_VirtualPlates' options can be found in the Interface Options > _VirtualPlates menu.
  • Nameplate Scale Limits:
    • Minimum Scale: Limits how small nameplates can shrink to. Values can range from 0 (meaning disabled) to 1 (meaning plates won't get smaller than their default size). For example, a value of 0.5 would keep plates from shrinking beyond half their original size.
    • Limit maximum scale: When enabled, this prevents nameplates from getting too big when they get close to your camera.
    • Maximum Scale: Similar to the “Minimum Scale” slider, but this value controls how many times larger than the default size a nameplate can grow to.
  • Scale Factor: When nameplates are this many yards from the screen, they'll be normal sized. Larger distances mean larger nameplates.

  • 3.3.5.3:
    • Final release. _VirtualPlates will no longer work after the Cataclysm expansion.
    • Added deDE localization by muhmiauwau from CurseForge.
  • 3.3.5.2:
  • 3.3.5.1: Removed options to adjust scale factors based on camera zoom, since camera info is no longer available to addons.
  • 3.3.0.1:
    • Hack workaround for blacklisted nameplate depths.
    • No longer forces overlapping nameplates feature on.
    • OnUpdate script handlers on plate Visuals now get assigned to the plates directly to preserve their execution order.
  • 3.2.2.5:
    • Fixed issue where addons could get a hold of raw nameplates before _VirtualPlates replaced them.
    • Reworked handling of frame levels. _VirtualPlates shouldn't interfere with the relative frame levels of children any more.
  • 3.2.2.4: Added a Maximum Scale option.
  • 3.2.2.3: Now loads LibCamera-1.0 properly.
  • 3.2.2.2:
    • Added a configuration pane with various options.
    • ScaleFactor can now optionally scale with camera distance.
    • Added a minimum scale option to prevent plates from getting too small at long range.
  • 3.2.2.1: Initial commit.

forgot to mention that of course i tried this. The setting is made irrelevant by enabling VirtualPlates. on any char you enable this addon, the setting no matter how you set it acts as i described.

I don't normally play with that feature enabled, but I just tried it and can't get it to work... No matter what. Even with no addons enabled on a new character, my camera won't swivel behind my character when I move.

Does your camera return like it should with _VirtualPlates (and LibCamera-1.0 if you have it) disabled?

Well I managed to fix my own settings to get Camera Follow to work, but I don't know if this will work for you. Open the file <World of Warcraft\WTF\Account\{AccountName}\config-cache.wtf> and delete any line with the word "camera" in it. I don't think there's any easier way to do this, and I don't know if the fix will last.

Honorable Mention.

I wanted to mention that I did manage to get the addon to work again. It was conflicting with an addon I had previously, that stopped working, and I was too lazy to remove it.

I also wanted to mention that _VirtualPlates works with evl_NamePlates which you can find included in the "Roth UI (Diablo 3 theme)" UI add-on from "zork" here on WoWInterface.

I am currently using that now. I have searched via WoWInterface and have not found evl_NamePlates available separately from the Roth UI (Diablo 3 theme) UI add-on by zork. You might get lucky and find it separately somewhere else on the net, by searching google, or any other search engine you prefer.

I would recommend adding it to your description with the rest of the Name Plate graphic add-ons. I think it's quite nice, and it has a feature that I haven't seen in other Name Plate graphic add-ons.

ok, definitely using this one and living it. now i have a little request:

virtualnames

i mean, many times you have another pg or a npc between the camera and your toon, and its name is huge and you see bad pixeled fonts, the name occupies the whole screen and u cant see your toon, and stuff like that.
what about include names support on this, or write a new addon managing that oddities?

The best solution I can think of is to enable the Maximum Scale option and adjust it so that nameplates don't get too huge. Fonts do look funny when zoomed in, and they kind of jump around in size when zooming, but there's no easy way around that with WoW.

Nerfed

Well nameplates looked good for a while, but come 3.3, _VirtualPlates won't work anymore.

There doesn't seem to be any Default UI alternative, and Blizzard probably will not add a feature like it. They nerfed _VirtualPlates because knowing your distance from mobs isn't something Blizzard wants mods doing. It follows, therefore, that they won't make nameplates grow and shrink on their own, since mods would be able to read that too.

Maybe if there's enough support for the feature on the Blizzard forums, they might change their mind. The change seems like a knee-jerk reaction to me. Who knows? But if we don't get Blizzard's attention, nameplates are about to look a lot worse in 3.3.

Well, that sucks...both for you as the developer and us as the community. They usually only nerf things that could be potentially used for automation/decision making. It doesn't seem their style to nerf an informative graphical thing like this.

the question now is: any addon giving info about distance will be useless because no more info about distance will be sent?

Only for nameplates. Things like action bars turning red when out of range will still work.

There is the API function IsSpellInRange(spell), that all spell range mods use. You could use this to "fix" _VirtualPlates, but it would be a real dirty fix because it's class limited(there are classes with 36 yard range spells, but there are also classes with only 25 yard range spells, etc...) and there is no way to determine exactly the distance between you and the enemy, because you are limited to the range spells you have, if you have 36 yard and 16 yard spells, you can only know if the enemy is WITHIN 36 yards or 16 yards, but not wether he is at 14 or 12 or 5 yards away from you. And the final problem with this is, it would've only worked on your target.
