NameScore  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: v0.3 (beta)
by: Recompense [More]

THIS ADDON IS STILL IN BETA TESTING. FEEL FREE TO USE IT NOW, BUT IT WILL CHANGE AS IT IS DEVELOPED.

FIND A NAME THAT IS SCORED TOO HIGH? LOOK AT THE BOTTOM.

FIND A NAME THAT IS SCORED TOO LOW? Chances are your judgment is just flawed, but leave me a comment.

There are many tools out there to make it easy to rate a player; to judge them based on a limited amount of information. Their job is to take what you can know about a player and extrapolate a number to estimate what you don't know. Some do this by measuring DPS; some by calculating a score for a player's gear; and some by comparing achievements. But these measures are flawed: DPS depends on the fight, gear does not alone give an indication of skill, and a person can be carried through heroics and raids to get those achievements through no effort of their own.

However, there is one single choice that irrevocably* defines how a person views the game, their character, their role within WoW, and how they want to be perceived by others. By examining this single choice, you can accurately predict whether the person you are about to group with takes the game seriously and wants to advance, or is just another example of someone full of themselves.

--------------------------------------------------------------------
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches.

The Bible (Prov. 22:1)
--------------------------------------------------------------------

NameScore is an addon to objectively evaluate the name of a character in the game. When enabled, you can see the score for a player's name by mousing over them and examining the tooltip. For quick identification, the score is assigned a letter grade A-F through standard grade divisions. The score and grade will be color coded, with higher grades as bright green while any failing grades will be bright red.

The grade is determined by a variety of factors grouped into four categories:
  • Legibility / Readability
  • Appropriateness
  • Aesthetics
  • Miscellaneous
The addon uses a variety of measures, including language parsing, linguistic theory, and a dash of "Would it makes sense for someone to have this as their actual name?" to determine the final score for a character. Should you wish to know more about how a person's name was graded, target them and type /namescore. Their name will be submitted for grading and you will be able to review the results.

A slightly more detailed explanation as to the grading process can be found in the addon folder, under the file Scoring.txt

* unless, of course, one pays a fee.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Special thanks to:

- Tiae on the UI and Macros Forum for providing me with an algorithm for scoring, even though I decided it didn't fit and abandoned it.
- The other members of BU for their assistance and suggestions.
- And, of course, Robby -- without whom I'd never find bugs or enjoy working on addons!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Capturing names that are scored too high (i.e. I haven't yet thought up a name quite as stupid as the one they picked):

If you find someone whose name is excessively high, target them, and type /namescore add. You won't get any confirmation, but their name will be stored in the addon's variables.

You can then message me here on WoWI and I can either give you instructions on how to PM me the data, or give me your server, faction, character name, and regular play time and I will log in to retrieve the data from your computer!

--------------------------------------------------------------------

To do list:

- Add in additional information to name tables for appropriateness filters.
- Create a configurable threshold that automatically boots people from groups if they have a namescore below said threshold.
- Allow arbitrary input so players can see what their namescore would be for a character with an arbitrary name.

v0.3b:

- Graphic display for name analysis completed.
- Cleaned up organization of name data to make it easier to add database information.

v0.2b:

- Syncing between clients enabled for saved names.
- Foreign characters are now switched with their "English" counterparts before names are parsed.

Inappropriate words that are part of another word means that larger word is even more inappropriate. Just as a Kirby that swallows a demon can only use the power to become demonic, a name that contains an inappropriate word somewhere is itself inappropriate.

No, this addon is behaving perfectly. If you think it's nitpicky now, wait until I finish updating it.

A wizard probably did it after the wind toppled his card house.

Bad humor aside, the point is that NameScore seems to be turning seemingly alright words and names into pointsinks because one of the words coincidentally contains a word the AddOn deems unfitting to have in a name. Not sure just how much nit-picking work it'd be, and how far you'd actually be willing to bother about such, but it could probably be an idea to create some kind of filter that makes NameScore ignore some otherwise inappropriate words because they're supposed to be part of another word.

Though I think I just encountered a character with a name that the AddOn genuinely rated too low. "Windbane", the character was named; which would have been a good and proper name if it wasn't for the fact that NameScore saw the "Wind" part as just "win" (and from there chopped a hefty 160 points away).

Thanks for reminding me I need to check for "bane" though

Oh, a semantics game. I love those!

From Wikipedia:
"Beta" is a nickname for software which has passed the alpha testing stage of development and has been released to users for software testing before its official release. It is the prototype of the software that is released to the public. Beta testing allows the software to undergo usability testing with users who provide feedback, so that any malfunctions these users find in the software can be reported to the developers and fixed. Beta software can be unstable and could cause crashes or data loss.
Sooo I've released it to the public - check.

It's a prototype - check.

Users are providing feedback - check.

Can be unstabled and could cause crashes or data loss - check. Well, it's not unstable, but it's not finished either.

Looks like a beta, tastes like a beta... but hey, if you wanna call it pre-alpha, that's cool!

Let's make a deal -- you don't download it until it's marked as a release. Then you can harp on its flaws.

That is not what beta means.

But lets assume that it does.
You have downloaded the beta version of version .2 of the addon, pretty sure since we're not even close to version 1.0 you can safely assume that this addon isnt anywhere close to finished.

Let's recap, you are testing the BETA version of NameScore 0.2.

Yes, it does need work.

It's a BETA.

I thought putting that in large letters at the top of the description page would suffice, as well as noting it in the version number.

Guess I was wrong.

I think it might be neat to see a database (perhaps not added to this addon but maybe a standalone?) that covers name meanings - be they real meaning of names or a list that gets updated by users telling how they came up with the name or something.

Anyways, an idea that came about before my first cup of coffee...

It's not going to be updated regularly with database entries for a while - was working on Livestock for a bit, and am now working on the GUI that I want.

Adding the database is the easy part, so it's going to be last. I want the infrastructure for everything else to be in place so that as I get updates, it'll be a quick thing to add them in.
