Well, you don't have walk forward 2 seconds at once. You can walk in all direction you want and how long you want. So just play normal, after walking in total(!) 2 seconds forward the calibration is finished and the range check should work.

That's because the range calibration was not done correctly. At the moment there is are problems with this. You have to walk staight forward when you enter the instance otherwise the ranges will be too short or to wide. I have to improve this to get is also working when you walk backwards or to the side. It is simpler than TotemGuru. TotemGuru comes with a lot more options which I simply don't need to find out what totems are currently in use.
