RaresTip

Version: r10
by: Nathanyel [More]

This addon was inspired by and uses code derived from SymbiosisTip by Wildbreath.

Mists of Pandaria added several rare enemies that drop unique items, and 5.4's Timeless Isle continued that with countless more.
Warlords of Draenor... pulled the lever to max and broke it.

This addon is intended to help you remember which NPC drops which unique item. As you mouse over an NPC, an additional tooltip for the item is shown. Timeless Isle rares often have secondary drops as well, shown in a shortened secondary tooltip.
By default, tooltips fade after being shown, unless the item is still required for an achievement. Holding Shift keeps them shown.
Options are on the way! (I just suck at XML)

Now with full Draenor data!
Draenor rares below level 100 drop their items with a 100% chance on the first kill, afterwards they are normal enemies.
Rares at level 100 usually have a lower chance to drop their unique item, but can be killed once per day.
RaresTip will show when you already have defeated a rare (today)
Also still in: Pandaria rares, including Zandalari Warbringers (to help identify which mount they can drop) and some other NPCs, mostly from Pandaria, that drop interesting items.
I'm very open to suggestions what else could be added

To find Draenor's rare NPCs and objects, I recommend HandyNotes_DraenorTreasures

r10: 6.2.2 new Rares, Hallow's End Garrison Rare, added some missing Rares and info, minor adjustments to the logic (non-versioned change to r10: removed the warning about looting Arachnis, was hotfixed)

r09: fix for tooltips of minimap icons created by a Treasure Map

r08: the western Strongpoint summons the Houndmaster, not Krag'goth

r07: 6.2 & Tanaan

r06: 6.1 toc bump

r05: Talador, Spires of Arak, Nagrand. Sorry it took so long. Significant code improvements, though object ("secret") tooltips are still wonky.

r04: Frostfire Ridge, Shadowmoon Valley, Gorgrond rares. More later. Vignette encounter support.

r03: Patch 6.0 compatibility, secondary tooltips for secondary drops, auto-fade

r02: removed functionality to equalize the widths of unit tooltip and RaresTip frame. Sorry for that. Didn't work when I tried it on my end, so I forgot about that code, and people disliked it.

r01: initial version. Still has the tooltip "bug" mentioned above, if you like it. May or may not actually work.

Legion?

Any chance this will be updated for Legion? Not sure it needs it, just going through my list of addons that haven't been updated since before Legion dropped and nudging on all of them.

Thanks for the addon, it's helped a lot!

Interesting... although tooltips from RaresTip should have the [RaresTip]/[RaresMinor] tag...

If this happens again, type /framestack to toggle an info window for interface stuff. Mouse over the persistent tooltip and check what it says. Usually the name of the frame/tooltip should indicate which addon created it - unless it's GameTooltip or ItemRefTooltip.

Persistent tooltip

I was at Lion's Watch, and had the Arakkoa merchant's window open. (the one standing outside next to the daily questgiver.) When I hovered my mouse over the Empowered Apexis Fragment in the merchant display, I got a tooltip that I assume is from Rares TIp, as no other addon gives me tooltips like this that I know of.

When I moved my mouse off that item, the tooltip remained. When I went to the next page in the merchant window, the tooltip went away. When I came back to the first page, the tool tip came back despite that my mouse pointer wasn't anywhere near the item. When I closed the merchant window, it stayed on my screen. When I hearthed back to my garrison, it stayed on my screen.

Screenshot of the tooltip in the upper left of my screen while I'm in my garrison is here on imgure.

No errors popped while this was happening.

Oh right, the Treasure Maps. Never used one of those, can't imagine how these tooltips would be different, but I'll look into it... probably on the weekend, though.

Huh, I thought I took care of that. Will look into it again, thanks for reporting this!
No, I'm not using that addon. I mean the default one that blizz puts up - it's the same as the one that shows for the cache right outside your town hall. The first time I logged in after downloading Rares Tip, I was in Nagrand, having gotten the Nagrand Treasure Map from a follower mission. I was at the ?Shadow Valley? where there are two treasures, the Pale Elixir and Pokhar's Thirteenth Axe. I hovered over the Pale Elixir marker, and got the full tooltip for Pale Elixir. Unfortunately, it took me 5 tries to figure out what was going on, cause the tooltip from Rares Tip was right at the top edge of my game client window (I haven't moved hte minimap elsewhere), was in small type, and faded out fast. I realize I could change the fadeout time, but this was the first time your addon had shown up, and I hadn't realized what it would do or look like. Also, I had installed it after I got out of WoW the previous time, and had honestly forgotten about it. In any case, it showed up over the minimap tool tip, and right now I'm not sure if it stayed long enough that hte minimap blinked out before it finally faded, or I was twitching my hand trying to figure out what was going on and thus it left cause I was no longer hovering over the icon.

I know other tool tips seem to have a clue where they are relative to the edge of the client, and position themselves so they're further into the window. I have no idea how this happens, of course.

Thanks!

I'm not sure if this *could* be changed. When I mouse over the garrison resource items on the *minimap*, when I'm out in the field, the extra tooltip for what they are shows up - completely obscuring the regular tooltip, *probably* because of placement of the tooltip relative to the mouse. This might not be so bad, except it stays up just long enough to completely obscure the actual tooltip, and then fades just after the regular tooltip, and due to the smaller type and such I end up not being able to read either one.

And I'm not really sure I'm explaining it well.

I haven't had the extra tooltip show up for anything else, I expect because I haven't come across anything else yet.

I really like the addon so far...

Yep, some functions changed and actually take less varied parameters now. edit but your issue is actually something different, a semi-rare occurrence of the parameter being nil. I noticed that, too, and it's already fixed in my dev version
I'm already in the process of rewriting the addon for WoD, I'm just having trouble finding time, still in the aftermath of moving to a new apartment.

Suggestion to add:
Option to just show info with a modifier key like ctrl or alt key or option to bind a key so it wont show all the time you have a mouseover your target since i use mouseovertarget macro for my spells

Adding support to this.

Downloaded this addon to drop into Duffed and it auto resized Duffed's normally small tooltips to outrageously large even when there was nothing being displayed for RaresTip. This just shouldn't happen.

Changed my NPC tooltips to that.
