NeedToKnow  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 4.6.5
by: lieandswell, Kitjan

NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

Future versions of NeedToKnow will not include the reminder icons. They've been spun off into their own separate mod called TellMeWhen, with greatly expanded functionality.

Things requested in the comments below that can be done with TellMeWhen include:

- show when a mob does not have a specific debuff
- show when the player does not have a specific buff
- icons can be clicked through
- variable number of rows/columns of icons

Excellent work! Please tell me that you're going to provide updates for WotLK.
Also, a feature you could add would be an On/Off text toggler.

Great Work m8 but if u could add some more stuff would be imba addon. Like:

- Alpha on the bars,
- Background Color,
- Icon on the left on the right, no icon option,
- Option for border, no border option,
- Informations like OBI addon On Button Information,
- More textures or to share from Share Media,
- Text Size,
- Bars to drop down atm they are static,*
Example:

Mine Bars:
1.Slice & Dice
2.Rupture
3.Sap
4.Blind

Now they are static mean u use 2 spells like:
1.Slice & Dice -Bar-
-Free Space-
3.Sap -Bar-
-Free Space-

It should be more like:
Mine Bars:
1.Slice & Dice
2.Rupture
3.Sap
4.Blind

They need to have drop down to 1st bar:
Anchor*
1.Slice & Dice
2.Sap

Like Rogue Power Bars addon.

Srry for mine bad english...

Some of those graphical options are on the to-do list, Lastbreath, but having static bars is (to me) the most important feature of NeedToKnow. I wrote it specifically because all the other buff/debuff mods having moving bars, which I personally find distracting and more difficult to interpret. If you prefer moving bars, there are lots of other buffbar addons to choose from.

Yes, I never understood the concept of having to search for the buff/debuff you need to monitor through the whole pack and every time it having different place. I have been looking for needtoknow addon for an year and thanks the EJ rogue wotlk discussion for poiting me
So much thanks for the addon lieandswell, I will switch to it primary this weekend, finally the search is over

Okay, first impressions: great mod
...and first request too: more than one buff/debuff/whatever per bar. The idea - I have lock and rogue to play and both have some "needtoknow" stuff that can be one of... for example the 5 or so warlock curses, it will be best that I can setup one bar for them all.

After using this for the first few days, I really need to say that I like it. Easy configuration, customization... exactelly what I was looking for. There is only one thing I'm really missing, and I'd like to know if there is any chance to add this feature:

My mainchar is a ret-paladin, and as we all know, a ret can keep judgements from other pallies on a mob up with his Crusader Strike. So I'd like to see the time(r) for debuffs from other people on the same target as well. At least those coming from the same class...

Is there any chance at you could add this?

DrunkenDonkey is correct: this is possible in WoW 3.0 but not in 2.4. I actually already have this implemented in the WotLK version of NeedToKnow I've been testing on beta, so you should get it as soon as 3.0 hits live. In like two weeks, is my understanding.

Also, the ability to track multiple buffs/debuffs with a single bar is a really good idea and is now on my to-do list. Once it's implemented, you should be able to use one bar to track different paladin seals, different rogue stuns, etc.

What I'm wondering now is: if more than one of the watched buffs/debuffs are up, would it be better to have the bar show the one with the highest priority (set by the user), or show the one with the longest time left? The time left option will be more cpu intensive, since the addon would have to check for all of them instead of just the first in the list it comes across. But it might be more useful. PM me if you have an opinion. I suppose it could be an option, too.

lieandswell, imo just show the multiple buffs/debuffs by priority, option is best ofc, but it is an additional work to do and most of the cases on "stacked" bars only single buff/debuff will be shown anyway

Would it be possible to sort/rearrange buff/debuffs of certain group up/down after everything is setup already? Or is this already possible, and I just didn't see it?

I really like the mod -- the visual style is clean and the UI is simple and intuitive. I only have the following requests/suggestions:

1) Can you add user profiles to it? I'd like to set up a different set of bars for PvP and raiding, as I don't always care about keeping up the same buffs/debuffs from one to the other.

2) Can you allow us to copy/paste the settings for one bar to another? This would be useful if, for example, you are a rogue and want all your stuns to be one color, all your poisons to be another, and all your haste effects another. You won't have to play with the color selector for every one of them... you can just copy the color

In lieu of the above, could you set the groups to "grow up" or "grow down", and have the bars appear in order of priority based on how we set them up in the window? I hate seeing gaps between bars when not all of my buffs or debuffs are currently applied.

I hate seeing gaps between bars when not all of my buffs or debuffs are currently applied.
One of the core features of NeedToKnow that the bars always appear in exactly the same on-screen position you set them to and don't move around during combat. For some people, this makes them much easier to keep track of -- you don't have to look several places to find the information you want.

If the gaps between bars bother you, you might want to look at Elkano's Buff Bars or Satrina's Buff Frames. They're both pretty customizable and will condense bars into a single group.

That said, changing the position of bars in a group after you've set them up (like Farook mentioned) would be useful. There have definitely been times when I've decided that, for example, it'd be better to have the Rupture bar above Blade Flurry instead of below it. Right now, you have to change both bars to do that. It doesn't take a real long time, but it's not as convenient as it could be.
