MapNotes 2  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.0.0.r154
by: Mery [More]

MapNotes 2.0

PLEASE always keep a backup of "WTF\Account\<AccountName>\SavedVariables\MapNotes.lua" before using a new version or you risk losing your notes.

This is a complete rewrite of MapNotes (and my first working test version). Please keep in mind that this AddOn is not finished yet and that I don't know how long it will take to work on more features. Here is a simple overview of what it does:

  • Creates it's own World Map Frame, to use this new map, the only option at the moment is to set a Keybinding. New: Use "/mn show" to bring up the map once, go to options (top left corner) and set "Replace map".
  • Double click on a zone map to open the menu (create a new note).
  • Right click on a note to open the context menu for that note.
  • If you mouseover more than one note, right click to keep the "Multiple POI Menu" open. You can now move the mouse over every single entry and right click the note you want.
  • You can enable/disable different POI sets in the "POI Menu" drop down on the top.
  • In the note context menu you can set (or unset) a note as Mininote. This will show the note on the Minimap if you are in that zone (will not work for the new zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms).
  • Click the arrow in the upper left corner to open the "Side Menu". You can now see which notes you set as Mininotes for the shown zone and remove them from the list.
  • Instance Maps: Instance Maps for MapNotes can be found for Download @ Rapidshare (due to the size of the file).
Known bugs:
  • No highlights in the edit menu drop downs.
Changelog:
  • r144 -> r154:
    Added support for displaying Gatherer (www.gathereraddon.com) notes on the map (display options are only avaiable through the drop down menu on the map, changing in the gatherer options will not have any effect). You can now bring up the map with "/mn show" and then change the options to replace the priginal map -> it will use the built in binding and open when clicked on the minimap icon then. Fixed a bug in the POI menu drop down submenu.
  • r110 -> r144:
    Added a options menu, which can be opened with the button in the topleft, you can create and modify Categories in there now.
    Also there are some small other changes in that I don't remeber all.
  • r109 -> r110:
    Fixed the startup bug when MapNotesInstance is not installed.
  • r108 -> r109:
    Fixed a bug that prevented the Mininotes from working properly (and maybe more).
  • r103 -> r108:
    All zones beside battlegrounds should now work with Mininotes. Some other minor changes.
  • r100 -> r103:
    You should now be able to send notes to other players (and some minor changes).
  • r96 -> r100:
    Some small improvements in the SideMenu. Removed MapNotesInstance (the instance maps), MapNotesInstance is now avaiable for Download @ Rapidshare. In case external links are not allowed here please poke me on IRC or PM and I'll remove it, in case they are allowed: Please notice that those files don't get reviewed by WoWInterface and as such handle them with care. (There are 2 reasons it is uploaded there: 1) It is over 6MB because I save the maps the same way Blizzard does 2) Some thing in my connection doesn't let me upload that big files via webpages (times out).)
  • r90 -> r96:
    Added a sample instance (Stockades in SW), note that I don't like the looks of it (probably just need to put more work into the map). Fixed some minor stuff (Cosmic map, BG maps...)
  • r89 -> r90:
    Added a simple Waypoint support (An arrow over your head that shows in the direction of one specific note). It can only be turned on / off via the notes context menu and requires the note to be set as Mininote (you cannot chose to only set it as Waypoint ).
  • r84 -> r89:
    Added support to import old MapNotes, just type "/mapnotesimport" (you may need to copy "SavedVariables\MapNotes.lua" from your live copy to the beta client or revert SavedVariables\MapNotes.lua to your backup or add the MapNotes_Data block of your old / backed up / live SavedVariables file to the TBC beta client file). This won't delete the old MapNotes table internally, you can do so by typing "/script MapNotes_Data = nil".
    Note that the textcolor and lines between notes don't get imported.

I'm glad to tell you that you're wrong, Eobet.
Check out MobMap and you have all you are looking for. Perfect companion for this addon.

When this mod is out of beta, will it enable me to download a database of quest objective locations and turn in NCPs to overlay in the map window?

I've been searching a lot for such a mod, but in the only ones I've tried (Atlas Quest and Cartographer Quest) I wasn't able to figure out how to enable the functionality, and something called QuestHistoryMap (a mod of Gatherer) was outdated.

Seems like there's a gap in the mod scene waiting to be filled, so I hope this could be it!

Cartographer is a completly different addon that basically provies similar (alot more, some less) features. Since MapNotes creates its own map frame they can work at the same time, but they don't work 'together'. (You#d find Cartographer features on the original map and MapNotes features on the MapNotes map).

Hmm very late answer, probably due to x-mas and that stupid nintendo console =).
Addtional note categories as well as show notes of only selected categories is planned, however you always need a GUI for those stuff which is why it isn't in yet, shouldn't be too long.

Coordiantes is planned too.

Vote noted.

Regading the Pet bar: From reading the forums there might be a bug with the petbar in the default ui and not one of the addons and i'll keep reading there and see if a solutions pops up, untill then I'd say it is most likly not the (direct) fault of an addon.

Has anyone else noticed that with this addon enabled, summoning a pet (warlock) during combat stops the Pet Action Bar from showing up? I'm getting the same problem with MapNotes (Fan's Update). No errors show up though.

I like the graphics but...

I like the graphical style of this version of MapNotes, but im gonna have to stick with MapNotes(Fans Update)

It allows me to make notes on Atlas maps, and it has the multiple mininotes which is REALLY useful and something that tempted me in this version
And Ciphersimian just released a stand alone update of WOWKB which works with the Fans version

And sorry, but I find all the dependancies that get installed at the same time a little annoying - MapNotes(FansUpdate), is just one AddOn folder and is about a quarter of the size
I wonder if they would make their graphics nice to look at?

Still having a problem with Mininotes in r109...
MapNotesMininote\MapNotesMininote.XML.lua: 144: attempt to call field 'OnLoad' (a nil value)
I see the same thing on startup. I've had this message with all versions posted to this site so far.

Fixed, just download r110.

Thanks for catching that, it only happens if you don't have MapNotesInstance, well I got it fixed but its always somehow hard to upload files via the browser for me and right now because wowi seems to be a little slow it looks simply impossible - expect the fix when I get to upload it.

(If you want to fix it yourself change line 13 from "MaoNotesMininote\MapNotesMininote.lua" (Note: not the file that throws the error) from "or not MapNotesInstance) then return; end;" to "and not MapNotesInstance) then return; end;")

Well the problem is I didn't maintain my original MapNotes for a very long time (mostly due to time reasons), but others did. Still I'll use my original name for this one, which is technically not second branch for TBC but a complete new and different AddOn with just the same name. I agree this can or will be confusing /shrug I dunno how to solve this without me searching for a new name (which I don't intend to).
I for one don't want to have to choose one or the other.
Well this is far from complete (notice the "Alpha" in the name), but you should try out the Instance map AddOn (which has only a rapidshare.com link so far) - I know that there are alot of instances still missing, but you'll see how it is supposed to work.
Edit: Also you will usually only use one AddOn to make notes on the map, there is CT_MapMod and MetaMap too, there is always a choice to make

Haha, it wouldn't surprise me if I *was* the only one that used the line functionality in the original MapNotes.

I thought the mininote icon movement looked kinda like the way the Gatherer icons moved after they updated Silithus, so that makes sense.

Time to go play with the latest version!

Thanks!

Did you have any plans to add the line functionality from the original MapNotes (connect two POI with a line)? I found it to be nice to mark paths using waypoints and lines, for example.
It is sure a possibility, I thought nobody ever used that

Also - I was testing out the waypoint arrow feature (so classy!) in Silithus, and I noticed that the zone scaling seemed to be off.

0.09468465888932, 0.39731975488374, 0.76460608512626

are the values that Gatherer uses, and they look to be correct for MapNotes as well.
Uhm yeah Gatherer values are correct - well the ones included here are too, just for the "old" Silithus map (when AQ was on the bottom half) from like a year ago, I'll change them (and add the missing ones for the new zones, as I think Blizzard fixed the maps now) in 104+. Thanks for catching that!
