Pawn  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.8.10
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.8.10

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for the new Gnomeregan items with hit or crit to all attacks. Items with the new hit stat will receive points for your Hit and Hit (Spell) stats, and items with the new crit stat will receive points for your Crit and Crit (Spell) stats.

Version 2.8.9

Dragonflight: Updated stat weights for all classes and specs.
Dragonflight: Updated Pawn's scale color button to work with the new patch 10.2.5 color picker.

Version 2.8.8

Dragonflight: Removed the "Only show upgrades for my best armor type after level 27" option. After level 27, Pawn will now always stop showing items that are not the right type of armor for your class.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would suggest armor your character can't wear as upgrades.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would sometimes suggest socketing Glinting Flame Spessarite when it meant to suggest Sovereign Shadow Draenite. This bug potentially affected any time Glinting Flame Spessarite was suggested (such as in the socketing advisor popup), but didn't affect any other calculations or upgrade suggestions.

Version 2.8.7

Classic: Added support for the Classic trade skill and crafting window: hovering over the item icon in that window should now work the same as if the item were already in your bags.

Version 2.8.6

Dragonflight: More new stat weight updates, updated for patch 10.2.0.

Version 2.8.5

Dragonflight: New stat weights have been included for all classes and specs, including all evoker specs, based on the latest Ask Mr. Robot raid simulation data.

Version 2.8.4

To keep things responsive, especially on the slower Classic versions of the game, Pawn has a new system that caps how much processing power it will allow bag addons to use when calculating which items get green upgrade arrows. Roughly speaking, if the game runs at 60 FPS for you, Pawn will block bag addons from reducing that by more than 2 FPS. (This change doesn't affect you if you aren't using a custom bag addon.)

Version 2.8.3

Wrath Classic: The new gems for Content Phase 3 (Cardinal Ruby, etc.) will now show up in recommendations, and will be taken into account when determining the value of sockets on high-level gear.

Version 2.8.2

Dragonflight: Dragonflight 10.1.0 has a game bug that was causing Pawn to show the wrong information on "currently equipped" tooltips. That bug is fixed in Dragonflight 10.1.5. Pawn will stop annotating "currently equipped" tooltips until 10.1.5 launches.
Dragonflight: Added support for the 10.1.5 PTR.
Dragonflight: Added support for Augmentation Evokers. If you're using Pawn in Automatic mode (the default), you don't need to do anything extra. If you're using Pawn in Manual mode, you'll need to import your own Augmentation scale or use (shift-click) the one that comes with Pawn. (Stat weights for Augmentation aren't available yet so it's a placeholder in this version of Pawn.)

Version 2.8.1

Dragonflight: Fixed a problem that could occur when showing Pawn's version number on 10.1.0.

Version 2.8.0

Updated for Dragonflight: Embers of Neltharion (10.1.0).

Question Priest Holy

I'm utilizing Outfitter 5.6.1 and Pawn (most recent but not the alpha) on my Priest. In the Rebuild for... menu I only have an option for Shadow spec. Would you know why the other two aren't showing?

Hi! I'd never used that feature before, haha. I think at some point the guy who makes Outfitter told me about it.

On my characters, it looks like Outfitter lists the scales that are currently visible. Do you have Holy and Discipline hidden in Pawn? You might need to find them in Pawn's list and shift-click them to get them to show up in Outfitter. If that doesn't help then you will probably have better luck if you ask the creator of Outfitter.

2-hand vs 1-hand + off-hand

Hey all!

My main is a warlock who can (obviously) use a 2-hander or a 1-hand plus off-hand.
I'd like to know if I can use Pawn to see which is the better option?

I'm still leveling at the moment - but would like to see at a glance which is the better to equip especially when running dungeons. Am I right in thinking that just adding the total numbers for the 2 separates that show up at the bottom of the tool-tip can be compared with the number for the 2-hander?

I also tried dragging the 2-hander into one of the Compare slot - but there doesn't seem to be an option to drag the separates to the other side?

Help appreciated

(Oh, and thank you for a very nice add-on!)

Re: 2-hand vs 1-hand + off-hand

Hi! Yes, manually adding the raw values of your two one-handers and comparing them against the value of your two-hander is the appropriate thing to do. I'm still planning on developing some features in the future to make this process a little better.

If you'd like, you can see the raw values directly on the item tooltips (in addition to the Compare tab) by selecting the "show item values and upgrade %" option on the Options tab. I usually keep that option on, though you might find that it is a little too much extra clutter.

Mistweaver Monk - Offhand Weapon unusable?

Hello,

New to the "mistweaver" spec, so forgive me if there's an "obvious" reason for this, but........

I just noticed that the default scale for Mistweaver Monks has "Offhand Weapon" flagged as unusable.

I'm not sure if this was intentional, so I wanted to point it out.

Thanks,
Eddy

Hi! To see Ask Mr. Robot's stat weights, go to a page either for your own character or one of the generic characters, like this one:

http://www.askmrrobot.com/wow/gear/shamanrestoration

Then, click Edit Weights. There, you can see the stat weights that Ask Mr. Robot is using. To add them to Pawn, open up Pawn from your character sheet and go to the Scale tab. Choose the most appropriate one of the Wowhead scales in the list (as in, "Shaman: restoration"), and then click Copy. Give your new scale a name.

Now you have a scale (list of stat weights) that you can work with on the Values tab. Copy the stat weights from Ask Mr. Robot to Pawn. If there are any leftover values in Pawn that didn't come from the stats you added from Ask Mr. Robot, you can remove them with the Remove button. (For example, if the Wowhead scale you copied listed one crappy stat with a value of 13, but it didn't show up in the Ask Mr. Robot weights at all, be sure to remove it, or otherwise that crappy stat will become your best stat because Ask Mr. Robot weights usually only go up to 1.)

The reason I suggest starting with a Wowhead scale and not a blank one is that I already set those up to ignore weapons and armor that your class/spec can't use. But you can also start with a totally blank scale if you find that easier.

VgerAN, thanks again for such an amazing addon. works wonderful with ask mr. robot, of course, or any stat weighting app. like you said, just make your own custom scales (input your own data), very simple.

i have noticed a small issue when reforging - i tend to right-click the item i have equipped to transfer to the reforge UI. unfortunately pawn's reforging advisor doesn't show up. it does when i left click and drag the item to the open slot. not a big deal at all. just something i noticed.

thanks again!

Glad you like it! Thanks for the bug report—I didn't even know you could right-click items to reforge them. Got it fixed in Pawn 1.8.2.

Thanks a lot for this addon It is really helpful.

Can you please edit your descritpion on wowinterface. As a french player I waited a long time for a release of PawnFR before noticing it was removed and you now officially support french client on your Cusre page.

Thanks in advance.

Ah, good call; thanks! I don't think that French has received as much testing as some other languages, so let me know here, on Curse, or on Facebook if you run into any issues (namely the (?) symbol appearing on items next to perfectly normal stats), and I'll make sure that I or the French translator gets it fixed up.

Pawn shows mage values for my monk.

@VgerAN - Thanks! I was blind not to notice the checkbox at the bottom and "Show scale in tooltip". I looked all over inside options tabs and not at the main screen That was a great tip, I already removed unneeded scales from my other characters as well, which I had no idea that it was doable untill now..

----
Hi, my monk is 30 atm and at some point I've noticed that Pawn shows values for all 3 Mage specs in tooltip along with Monk specs. I've searched options and I can't see way to detach mage scales from tooltip. Here's what it looks like.
And just in case you might wonder, the character IS a monk, not mage

Hi! Shift-click the mage scales (or click them and then uncheck "show this scale in tooltips" at the bottom of the list) to get rid of them. If you only care about one or two monk specs you can get rid of those the same way.
