NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

Pandemic Support?

Can Pandemic support for Warlocks can be added as a feature? It may be beyond the scope of this addon, but I feel it's worth asking.

Essentially, Pandemic allows Warlocks to re-apply DOTs and retain up to 50% of the debuff duration if you re-cast the same spell while the old one is active. I'm currently using the visual cast time feature to emulate the Pandemic "safe zone", essentially where you can cast a DOT and lose no damage, but because DOT durations change with haste, this becomes inaccurate during haste buffs.

I'm not sure what kind of information the game provides to you in this respect, but if it can be done it would be much appreciated. If you could grab the tooltip debuff duration in the same way you grab "Choose cast time by spell...", then "set additional time" to half of that value when the debuff is applied, it would work perfectly.

Decimal place

Is there any way I can have the timers show an extra decimal place? For example:

Slice and Dice 18s

to

Slice and Dice 18.4s

I looked through all of the comments but I couldn't find anything.

Yes: right click on the bar in question, hover over "Time Format", and choose "Fractional Seconds"

Trying to think how to make this generically useful. Like, if it was a % of the duration, then it would cover the "last tick" length for many cases, but not for when haste adds an extra tick. hmm

The only addon I know of that has good Pandemic support is AffDots (http://www.curse.com/addons/wow/affdots). As far as making it a generically useful tool, I'm not sure it can be.

I added an option for font outlines in 4.0.12. Enjoy!

Font outline

First off, thank you for keeping this add-on up to date. I've been using it for a while and I just found out last week about being able to show icons. I love it.

As for the font outline, would it be possible to add more variation in the thickness of the outline? The normal font outline option is too thick in my opinion so it would be nice to have something thinner. Or is it just that the text on my bars are too small for it to look right with normal outline? Anyway, it's an excellent add-on and I appreciate the work and time you put into this.

How I use your add-on (perfect for my taste)

NTK is just passing a flag to the Blizzard API to add the outline, and the two options you see are all the API takes (as far as I know.) I'd suggest trying different fonts and font sizes to see if one of them has the right look. Looks like you're using a font with a dropshadow for your combat text; maybe try using that font for NTK?

Glad you like NTK!

I really love this addon and use it quite a lot as a cat. I have got an idea for another feature: It would be useful if one bar was able to work as a cooldown and a buff tracker at the same time. For example my berserk-ability has a 3min CD and works for 15sec. I think it would be great if the bar would slowly decrease while the spell is on CD (that's how i use NTK now) and when I activate berserk the bar could increase (and maybe change colour during the activation time). This way one bar could show me the CD time as well as the activation time.

Setting up two bars for it is a pain, and I opened Ticket 39 for it some time ago. I even tried something similar to what you suggested, but it turned out not to work well in practice: I couldn't easily tell by looking at the bar whether it was was filling or draining. They needed to look very different. When I build it myself using two bars, the buff portion is very bright and the cooldown very dark, and I can tell that way. But I don't want to just assume that near-black is the right answer for the cooldown portion... Nowadays, I have a big bar for the cooldown and a little bar next to it for the active buff.

It's definitely a common thing to track both, and it would be nice if it were a bit easier to set up, especially putting the two bars in the same place.

Hi I have set everything up correctly but for some reason my Tree of Life cooldown bar does now show the icon, even when I have it selected in the options. I have the same settings as my other cooldowns such as innervate or tranquility and they all work fine but its only ToL that refuses to show an icon. My OCD is getting to me help!

I've noticed that NTK gives me a warning about Incarnation, saying it can't get the spell info. There's some bug in the Blizzard API with that spell. Try it by id, maybe?
