NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!


FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.

I cant get the weapon enchant jade Spirit to work.
Is there somethign special about this? Cant track it. Any ideeas?

I'm not likely to add this officially any time soon, but for now you can edit your local copy of NeedToKnow.lua as follows

Change that to

5.1 UnitAura returns are as follows.
Code:
local name, rank, icon, count, debuffType, duration, expirationTime, unitCaster, canStealOrPurge, shouldConsolidate, spellId, canApplyAura, isBossDebuff, isCastByPlayer, ...  = UnitAura()
isCastByPlayer was slotted in after isBossDebuff so that they can have a variable number of arguments at the end.

It used to be you had val1,val2,val3 after isBossDebuff (positions #14,#15,#16) and isCastByPlayer at #17.

In 5.1 isCastByPlayer was moved after isBossDebuff at position #14 and there's a variable number of arguments from position #15 and onwards, val1,val2,val3,val4 have been observed sofar (hunter traps) but it makes sense that they moved it to the tail so they can add more as needed.

Hey, sorry if you are already aware of this issue, but I have a problem with blinking settings for totems (specifically Searing Totem, but I have tested with others such as Healing Stream and they all have this issue)

Blink Settings:

Enable for this bar: Checked

Blink out of combat: Unchecked
Blink only for bosses: Unchecked

Steps to reproduce:

Engage combat with target dummy with no Searing Totem cast
Blinking bar does NOT appear
Cast Searing Totem
Cast Totemic Recall
Blinking bar appears
Drop combat
Blinking bar DOES NOT disppear, and persists continually while out of combat, flying, rested, etc...

Other (related?) steps:

Engage combat with dummy with no totem cast
Cast totem (totem not engaged in combat w/ dummy)
Drop combat
Cast Totemic Recall
Blinking bar disappears correctly while out of combat/flying/rested

Additionally, if "Blink only for bosses" is checked, the blinking bar behaves correctly in terms of showing up when combat starts and the totem is not present, as well as not persisting after combat has dropped. However, I really would like functionality for non bosses as well as a reminder to cast totems.

If this information helps any I have noticed this behavior since the start of MoP. However I do not recall it during Cataclysm.

Depending on how easy this is to repro, maybe try doing dailies with NTK as your only addon and see if it still happens? There was once an addon that mucked with UnitAura and broke NTK.

Well, seems the Earth Shield and Last Raid Recipient aren't the only things broken. This morning I logged in, respecced to ele and started doing dailies and noticed that my Flame Shock timer was also broken. I could see the debuff on the target but no bar came up. Reloading UI fixed it and I took short combat logs from before and after reloading but it seems they are too long to paste here.

Hmm, that should certainly be the ideal situation for it... do you happen to have logs for that raid (like worldoflogs)? I suspect it has to do with the names of your tanks

Yes, using latest version. And this bug happens with raiders from my own guild. Actually never happened anywhere else except in our own raids. LFR and outdoor raids have worked fine so far. This has me completely puzzled. And as I said it just happens completely randomly, one pull it is fine and after wiping it just doesn't work anymore.

EDIT: And just to add some info, we raid 10man and I use this for tracking Earth Shield. Mainly use it on our two tanks and sometimes it can even happen that the timer shows if I cast the shield on one of them but doesn't when I cast it on the other. Can also work on both at the same time and be broken for both at the same time, while still working for others in the raid.

For completeness' sake here is the bar exported: bv1:{Unit=lastraid,Aura=Earth Shield,Clr={r=0.4078431372549,g=0.28235294117647,b=0.070588235294118}}

Hope this helps to track down the problem.
