MSAnnounce

Version: 5.0
by: koleye [More]

I made this addon due to the spotty connections that the raiders in my guild seem to have. We have wasted many attempts due to high MS from some of our key raiders, most notably our holy paladins. This was especially problematic when learning the limited attempt bosses in Icecrown Citadel on heroic mode. We often found ourselves typing random characters to test chat lag, as well as casting spells to test cast lag. This addon is intended for a raid leader to see everyone's MS in order to judge whether or not key people are experiencing high latency, so as to increase boss attempt efficiency.

How to operate this addon:
Typing "!ms" in guild chat will cause those with the addon to respond with "My current ping is X" in guild chat.
Typing /msa or /msannounce will enable or disable the addon.

To Do List:

MSAnnounce is currently lacking several features that I intend to add. The foremost being to add a window frame that lists everyone in the raid who has the addon enabled. The messages would perhaps be whispered to the raid leader, which would populate the window to reduce guild spam.

I also plan to add a threshold to reduce guild spam, perhaps around 500ms.

1.0.1

Changed chat message from "My current MS is X" to "My current ping is X"

Changed throttle to 20 seconds, up from 15.

Changed addon menu note to reflect chat message change.

I believe this addon to be very useful. Sure, it can easily be modified to adjust the values sent, but most WoW players won't.

As a guild leader, this addon could be very useful for proving that a raider is lagging as bad as they say they are.

I like it =].

The idea behind this isn't bad (for disciplined raiding guilds), but it's not exactly a reliable way to find who is lagging. I mean, it doesn't take much coding expertise (none, really) to rig this addon to always report a low MS value.

P.S.

It would be more usefull if someone would implement it in a Addon like DBM. Cause no one with a bad connecivity will dl this addon I think :P

In a high-end disciplined raiding guild, I don't think they'll need a mod that broadcasts their latency to discover that they're lagging, they'll know immediately and tell their RL that their connection's having problems or whatever.

My ping is somewhere around 250ms most of the time, so I suggested 300 as being pretty good. Maybe set 300 or 350 as the default threshold, and make it so if you type "!ms 500" it'll override the default. idk. Good luck.

You stated that "nobody's going to have this addon installed" and thus implied that it is not useful, yet you could say the same thing for the vast majority of addons developed for WoW. I can't say that I made this addon with pugs in mind. It's more for the convenience of my own guild, and any other guilds that should choose to use it. I understand that many raid/guild leaders have a tough time getting their raiders to install addons such as boss mods, but higher end guilds are very disciplined, and should a raid/guild leader require their raiders/members to have an addon, you can bet that they will do so.

Regarding your two suggestions, I am hesitant toward tying the announce and a ready check together, as it could only inflate spam. For example, my guild regularly uses Ready Checks for purposes other than assessing the readiness of the raid prior to a boss fight, such as votes or determining who in the raid is AFK. I do like your second suggestion however, and it is something that I will indeed add. I'm curious as to what would be a reasonable threshold though. I appreciate your comments!

lol Well, congratulations on coming up with an idea, getting the addon to actually work (I'll take your word for it), and (probably?) getting a beta key.

Uh, I think this is really useless. In a pug situation where you might be OK kicking people for having high latency, nobody's going to have this addon installed. In a guild situation where you could possibly get everyone to install the addon, you're not going to just kick a core raider for having a high ping time. OK, I'll grant that in a 25 man raiding guild where you could consistently have 30 raiders or so with some sitting out for some fights, you could swap someone with high latency out for someone else who's handy and fills that raider's role. Good luck getting 30 raiders to install this, lmao. I can't even get all ours to get DBM or BigWigs...

Assuming you are doing a guild run, and you have extra raiders online to fill roles of anyone lagging, and you get everyone to install your addon, you may still not even remember to type !ms before every boss fight, and if you do, it's going to get really spammy. So in the spirit of hoping to make this at least partially useful, may I suggest you (a) make this addon send it's MS to guild chat whenever the raid leader does a ready check and (b) make it only report your latency if it's above a certain threshold like, 300 or something.

Have fun in beta. lol
