by: Kaemin, Valdarix

PeskyText

An in-game character map for some commonly used enhanced ASCII such as character or guild names with special characters or symbols in them.

Using common text editing keyboard shortcuts such as ctrl+c to copy and ctrl+v to paste, anything in the PeskyText editbox can be easily inserted into other addons or into the chat window.

* /pt or /peskytext to show/hide the PeskyText window.
* /pt help or /peskytext help for a short description of usage.

12/31/11 - UPDATED to 4.3

6/24/10 - Updated ToC

* Remapped for a more intuitive layout.
* Version number changed to more adequately reflect game and addon version.

As near as I can determine, WoW (the program itself) utilizes 4 different ASCII code sets, only one of which I have been able to actually associate with a given code page; in this case, the standard ASCII (Windows-1252, ISO 10646, ISO 8879, ISO 8859-1).

Seemingly, WoW uses character maps that start with a given positive number and complete with a given odd number, internally. The standard being the number associated with the positive and the extended associated with the negative. The character code itself being 3 digits. The map code also being 3 digits.

The character map I based this addon on uses code 195 (the extended ASCII characters of the code that begins with character map 194). I have been able to determine that there is, at the very least, another character map below this one (192, 193) and 2 above it (196, 197 & 198, 199).

The difficulty here is that I, myself, can not test the European character set for the same reason that the enUS character set is unavailable to you on your client version: all I get are question marks or letters lacking their associated symbols.

I would have to ask that someone who is capable of determining the character map layout for the European client, test and determine which map set is being used.

I've gone as far as I can go, personally, and welcome any help from the community that is available.

Tried the patch as soon as I got my hands on it... Sadly it didn't solve the problem

Dunno what else to do to help out other than send you some positive vibes

Possible fix to the use of this AddOn with European systems.

It took a good deal of research into various ASCII code pages and how those are handled by Windows and other operating systems like MacOS, but in general the character page modes in the European community are specific to the ASCII 4 numeral character code.

When developing the PeskyText AddOn I was unaware of the differences between US releases of operating systems and those released in European countries. The US system is much more forgiving of using 3 digit character codes where the European system uses a separate table for each (3 digits and 4 digits).

The file in the Optional Files page is a potential fix for this issue.

Please let me know if it's effective.

I'm still looking into this but have been a bit distracted with RL, what with the recent US Holiday and family.

Just wanted to assure you that I'm still at it.

No trouble at all. I'm more than happy and willing to help the community and addon authors of the addons I mostly use in any way I can in order to improve the experience of us all. That said I did use PeskyText with Prat disabled and the results were not satisfactory. The same problem persisted; sadly enough. No diacritics appear above any kind of letter that has a diacritical mark on, in any kind of chat box, whether I have Prat enabled or not.

Something else I have also experienced follows, and this information might be of some use to you. In the past I only tried to copy/use letters with diacritical marks on them such as ñ, ä or ó. Those letters when pasted in any chat box, if I was using v.02, appeared as a question mark and if I was using 3.1.02r appeared as plain letters without the diacritical mark.

This time around (while still using 3.1.02r) I tried to copy/use a letter without a diacritical mark but still a "pesky" one nonetheless. The culprit letter in question was ash (æ). So when I pasted ash into a text box nothing but a question mark appeared.

In conclusion when using v.02 any kind of "pesky letter" when pasted appears as a question mark and when using 3.1.02r letters with diacritical marks on (such as ñ or ä) appear as plain letters (without the marks) and ligature letters (such as æ) appear as question marks.

I am researching it to more properly determine what's causing the problem so that I can apply a fix but it may take some time to nail down. The input regarding the differences between v.02 and 3.1.02r, as well as the information here, can only help.

Thank you.
Take your time to nail down whatever you think is the source of the problem. Such a useful addon should get some needed love in any way possible.

Hope I helped!

This was the case with your previous version. Indeed when I tried to insert a letter with a diacritic using version .02 only a question mark appeared instead of the letter. With version 3.1.02r the letter appears without the diacritic...

Do we have a solution to bypass this problem? Your addon is very useful for us non extended latin users and comes very handy in many a situation as lots of people across EU servers use letters with diacritics for their character names making it VERY difficult for us who don't use or can't use those diacritics to communicate with them (in-game mails etc etc)

Yes the proper letter shows in the PeskyText window. That is if I have clicked the a with the umlaut, the ä appears in the window. If I have clicked the n with a tilde, the ñ appears and so forth.

Well... technically yes! I use the latest version of Prat but didn't think this might be the culprit as PeskyText is supposed to instert those "pesky letters" in any kind of "chat" box and this includes the mail window right? And from my knowledge the chat interface has nothing to do with the mail window frame unless I'm horribly wrong...

Again, if the first question is true and the second is not, I think your problem is similar in that the client version you are using recognizes what's being pasted as a variant instead of what you see.

I'm Greek and I use both the English (not extended) and the Greek keyboard layouts for my day to day tasks and I have the enEU WOW client installed (if this is of any help)
Thank you for taking the time to report this problem. I'll have a look and see if I can find the reason why it may be copying incorrectly.

Question: Does the proper letter show in the PeskyText window?

Question: Do you have any kind of chat altering mod or AddOn?

If the first is true and the second is not, I have a feeling the problem is in the enEU client and not related to your keyboard layouts. Some symbols are unavailable in the wow client, showing only a '?' in game if you attempt to copy/paste or use the keyboard alt characters to insert them.

Neat Will point my guildies to this one. We're a bunch of scandinavians, brits, scots, welsh, dutch and whatnot, so now everyone can finally type those pesky characters. Even people who don't have them in their language tend to use them in their char names...

Glad it's useful for something more than group invites, friend and ignore lists.
