NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

Internal Cooldown starts a bar when an aura is applied to the player and the bar lasts for a time you have to type in. Spell Cooldown will also usable items (like your trinket), but you type in the name of the trinket and not the buff.

Maybe this is the wrong addon for this but; I was looking for a way to make it track the cooldown of a use trinket. Not the duration of the buff itself, just the cooldown. Somehow, I can't make NTK track this currently. Am I missing something? Or should I be looking for something else?

EDIT: Nevermind, just had to select "Internal Cooldown." Appended the length of it to be 120 seconds.

sure, thanks for your quick answer!
Other addons seem fine, but maybe cuz i copied the profiles from my character with its name before the name change. (for example pitbull untiframes had the profile saved with my characters previous name and i just copied it for the new name)
Ill make a ticket tomorrow. (im very tired atm

Ouch, that sucks! Does that only affect NTK? That's not something addons are in control over; we just get to choose if it's per-character or per-account. I'm currently working on moving settings to the per-account storage, but I still use the per-character settings to indicate which profile each spec should use. I have some ideas for a work-around, could you open a ticket so we can discuss it there?

name-problem

Hey!
I love this addon and i want to use it in the future aswell, but since i had a name change every setting i change wont get saved. With every single logout/login its lost.
Could it be that its because my new char name starts with an Æ ?
Cuz in the WTF folder the game saves it starting with a normal A.
Is there any option to solve this problem?
(everything is fine on my other chars)

Thanks.

Hopefully we can get Cataclysm support into the baseline version of NTK.

I got a beta key from wowinterface's dev key program, but sadly the EULA doesn't let me play it yet.
You don't have the author portal enabled so can't open tickets here but I'll try to get it done on Curse (ugh!).

I'm 99.9% sure the patched version will work fine on both the current beta build and the live client,
although I've only tested my changes on the beta.
(the changes are to do with the removal of 'this' as a global).

Edit:
Done, can be found here

If you're willing to hack your version for the time being, find the two lines that look like
Code:

and comment them out; ie change them to
Code:
-- NEEDTOKNOW.CURRENTSPEC = GetActiveTalentGroup()
Cheer's! sorry I didn't look through ticket system

Same setting's on both spec's?

Heya, love this mod, easy to set up, comes with what you need and nothing you don't.

In regards to how this mod works between spec's, is there an easy way to have both spec's use the exact same set up? I didn't see any setting to change the behaviour between spec's (sorry if there is one)

I know it's not hard to set up the mod again for the second spec but I may not get things exactly in the same spot as the first spec :P

I'm pretty good at looking through code in .lua file's and I found alot of line's that say "SPEC" in "NeedToKnow.lua" but I just don't know what to change

any help with this would be much appreciated top mod!

No, bars being in a predictable place was one of NTK's original reasons to be written. The gaps tell you what's missing.

captobvious: Use spellid instead of spell name. The 245 elemental totem is 67385, the 264 resto totem is 71220, the 245 Solace trinket is 67696. You can find these out from wowhead (the spellid is in the url), which is what I just did.
