PUG Warning

Version: 1.0
by: Ithilior [More]

PUG Warning is a simple, lightweight chat addon that uses slash commands to send notices at the beginning of an instance based on what role you are (tank, healer, dps). Notifications are sent in party chat, and only work if you are in a party. They are not sent to /raid or /say, so this is currently intended for PUGing 5-man instances, particularly Cata heroics.

Valid slash commands:

/pug tank
/pug healer
/pug dps

The tank notification:

Hello everyone . I am tanking, and we will be using CC, which I will mark.
DPS, if you pull off of me and die, it's your fault, not the healer's.
Pay attention, don't stand in fire and we'll be fine. We're all only human, so be prepared to forgive mistakes and wipe to learn fights and finish this instance.

The healer notification:

Hello everyone . I am healing.
DPS, if you pull off of the tank and die, it's your fault, not mine. If you want to live, don't break CC. The tank becomes very hard to keep alive otherwise.
Pay attention, don't stand in fire and we'll be fine. We're all only human, so be prepared to forgive mistakes and wipe to learn fights and finish this instance.

The DPS notification:

Hello everyone . I am a DPS, and like the rest of the DPS, I will be waiting for the tank to grab aggro before DPSing.
If any DPS pulls off the tank and dies, it's our own fault, not the healer's. I, as well as the rest of the DPS, will not break CC.
Pay attention, don't stand in fire and we'll be fine. We're all only human, so be prepared to forgive mistakes and wipe to learn fights and finish this instance.

Thanks to James Whitehead II and Rick Roe for the book World of Warcraft Programming. This addon is based off of the framework of the first "Hello World" addon, as well as the first box of code under Parsing Arguments here, by Parqui: http://www.wowwiki.com/HOWTO:_Create_a_Slash_Command. This frameworks were modified based on my research from the Lua manual and other WoWWiki source material.

Version Notes:

1.0 - Addon primary features complete. Only supports party chat.

Wish List:

Support options for /say and /raid channels.
Messages specifically for low level instances. (i.e "Hi, I'm the tank. I'm supposed to hold aggro so you don't die.)
Allow players to write their own custom messages in a dialog box to replace the default messages.

If you have something else you would like this addon to do, leave a comment and I'll do what I can, though I am but a novice programmer .

vikkyne: Fair enough. As a healer, I always look for the guy with the most health, which works 98% of the time. I respect how you feel about the commentary, and I definitely would like custom messages. That being said, particularly in normal dungeons, though still in heroics and definitely in newbie instances, I see these things being broken very frequently.

With all respect, there may be a reason they show up in forum rants . Another goal of this message is also to encourage people not to leave after the first wipe (i.e. the last line of the party message).

I will try to get custom messages going as soon as I can.

xtoq: I definitely want custom messages too. As a Wrath offspec tank for heroics, I almost put CC markings in the tank section, but the first problem was varying tank preferences for CC, and the second is the varying group composition from instance to instance.

I could see this addon eventually checking to see group composition and adjusting the message accordingly, but I have a lot to learn before that happens.

For both of you: I'm curious - what would you rather the message say for each of the roles?

Thanks for the feedback .

yeah, I'm on the fence as well, but customizable messages would be better; tanks have different preferences for CC marks if nothing else.

msg options

I get the idea of identifying yourself in a PUG. I often have pug healers ask who is tanking, although the shield icon is there on the avatars, and one can always ask if any roles are swapped or altered. But anyhow, I would prefer the option to alter the messages, and I am sure I could via the lua file. But at this point, while all the points in there are valid, they are often given in forum thread starter posts as condescending rants about stuff. How much of that can we take?

Role ID is a good idea. Not so much on all the commentary, but that's my two cents.
