Phalanx, the hive grows...

Introduction and General Foreshadowing

Narrator: It was a dark and stormy night.

[Lightning strikes.]

Esha: It's alive, aliiive~...
Igor: What ith?
Esha: Oh, what, sorry? Nothing, nothing is... it's just amusing to say.
Igor: I thee.
Esha: But I have completed my latest monstrocity, which I shall soon unleash upon the World, I call it the Phalanx Mind Subjugation (tm) system!
Igor: You're going to unleath Pee Emm Eth upon the World?
Esha: Yes!
Igor: I'll bite, Thir, tho what doeth it do?
Esha: It can be made to make people say things they're willing to say!
Igor: ...
Esha: It can also be made to force people to make emotive gestures that they were willing to do in the first place!
Igor: ...
Esha: People will be forced to do what they'd likely do anyway!
Igor: ... tho, it ithn't exactly thubjugation, then ith it?
Esha: Not as such. No.
Igor: I thee.
Esha: ...
Igor: I brought thome tea and little bithcuith!
Esha: Oh, lovely!

Narrator: I suppose the moral of all this is that our good Esha is somehow in a drunken state of mind again, despite the lack of actual drinking.

For those still reading...

Phalanx (a.k.a. the Phalanx Mind Subjugation (tm) system, a.k.a PMS) is a system wherein characters can be controlled with simple commands from a main character. Examples speak louder than long winded explanations, so here's an example!

/tell Victim !pms /me looks around for something to mount.
Victim looks around for something to mount.

In other words, it allows other people to force you to do anything that can be typed into the chat's entry box. Of course, if everyone could do this, it'd spell disaster. So PMS is designed to only work for people you've specifically added to a whitelist (hence: not exactly subjugation).

There's a nice options screen you can use to manage the whitelist (pictured on the right). This can be accessed by typing /phalanx, and you can use that to dictate whom has the right to use PMS upon your person.

Why?

I wanted to make something fun?

I like fun?

I play games to have fun?

Perhaps I was just tossing multiboxers a bone. They deserve some love.

I don't know, really. It just seemed like a fun idea at the time!

It could be great for a multiboxer though, just think, you could have a macro like this:

/tell Porthos !pms /me thrusts his sword into the air, "One for all!"
/tell Athos !pms /me thrusts his sword into the air, "One for all!"
/tell Aramis !pms /me thrusts his sword into the air, "One for all!"
/me rallies the cheer, "And all for one!"

Perhaps you're a multiboxer or a guild-leader who has all of his alts or lower ranked peons in a channel, and you wanted to do a rallying cry. You could do something like:

!pms /yell For the Horde!

At which point, perhaps some forty people would yell that. That'd be grand for boss-kill screenshots and such, wouldn't it?

Beyond that? I just think it's priceless.

Poll time!

Cast yer vote, how many people do you think will vote this low/report it because they haven't read the description properly and think it's "hax"? It'll be fun finding out!

I can see why you thought it would just be for saying stuff, I actually realised that my front page description might cause confusion, so I improved the state of the examples there.

Nope, it can basically be used for any chat-edit based stuff.

And nope, I'd never betray their trust like that! ;p I might make them all yell "No, I'm the real Madame Butterfly!" if they were to ever really annoy me. But that's about all I'd do.

Probably.

Oh my god.

That is awesome. I thought this was merely for saying stuff.

If you do get your guild to join in I've got a nice idea for ya!

/tell RaidLeader !pms /script SetLootMethod("master", UnitName("player"), 1) ;-)

Phalanx can already use emotes, though:

/tell Victim !pms /dance

And if you mean normal /me emotes:

/tell Victim !pms /me notices it's Christmas, and wonders if he'll get three ho's out of it.

It can perform anything that can be done via the chat's entry box, as it sends it through the victim's chat entry box.

I really need to stop using the name Victim in my examples.

Because of my approach though, mine works differently to Multiboxable. They sound similar on paper, but in practice and actual use they're quite different. That's why I won't try and bridge the gap to your mod, because I like your mod, and I like my mod, and I don't want to be in direct competition with your mod because of that.

What Phalanx is right now is what it'll continue to be, bar a few more possible future options.

It really was only designed to allow a player to hijack another player's chat entry box, that was my thought when I originally created it, and when I did, I didn't even have multiboxing in mind, to be hoenst. It's just that I'd joined a huge guild and I thought to myself: "Gods, it'd rock if we could all yell a slogan when we achieved our guild raid goal."

Only after I created the mod did the usefulness to multiboxers occur to me, so I threw that in the description too.

So that's my answer to that!

As for the acronym, yeah... ;p I ran so many names over in my head, but none of them were funny enough. And this was a mod I threw together in the space of an hour when I was just sitting around with my Tauren, in Elwynn, bored. I had to do something, and Phalanx was born of that desire. I think I spent more time on the name and on the mod's front page description than I did on the mod itself.

Now I just need to convince my guild to use it, and that I'm not going to do evil nasty HAXX things to them...

I recently uploaded a similar addon to this one recently. Feel free to ninja some functions if you like (such as emoting!) ;-)

Oh, and props on the acronym. It kinda sounds familiar...

Done!

It's disabled by default, o'course, but it's in there.

-----

Hm... on another topic, does anyone know of any multiboxers, or a guild who might be willing to grab a screenshot of this in use? I'd love to be able to show off a screenshot of a huge number of people yelling their guild slogan or somesuch.

Volunteers?

So... who thinks I should add an "Allow Everyone" option?

Perhaps something more specific, such as "Allow Everyone Say" and "Allow Everyone Emote" to stop things like random people utilising scripts?

I'm just letting this percolate in my noggin, having the option there might make it even funnier.
