Pawn  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.8.11
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.8.11

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for those new hit and crit stats, again. Because Blizzard broke them in a patch.

Version 2.8.10

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for the new Gnomeregan items with hit or crit to all attacks. Items with the new hit stat will receive points for your Hit and Hit (Spell) stats, and items with the new crit stat will receive points for your Crit and Crit (Spell) stats.

Version 2.8.9

Dragonflight: Updated stat weights for all classes and specs.
Dragonflight: Updated Pawn's scale color button to work with the new patch 10.2.5 color picker.

Version 2.8.8

Dragonflight: Removed the "Only show upgrades for my best armor type after level 27" option. After level 27, Pawn will now always stop showing items that are not the right type of armor for your class.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would suggest armor your character can't wear as upgrades.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would sometimes suggest socketing Glinting Flame Spessarite when it meant to suggest Sovereign Shadow Draenite. This bug potentially affected any time Glinting Flame Spessarite was suggested (such as in the socketing advisor popup), but didn't affect any other calculations or upgrade suggestions.

Version 2.8.7

Classic: Added support for the Classic trade skill and crafting window: hovering over the item icon in that window should now work the same as if the item were already in your bags.

Version 2.8.6

Dragonflight: More new stat weight updates, updated for patch 10.2.0.

Version 2.8.5

Dragonflight: New stat weights have been included for all classes and specs, including all evoker specs, based on the latest Ask Mr. Robot raid simulation data.

Version 2.8.4

To keep things responsive, especially on the slower Classic versions of the game, Pawn has a new system that caps how much processing power it will allow bag addons to use when calculating which items get green upgrade arrows. Roughly speaking, if the game runs at 60 FPS for you, Pawn will block bag addons from reducing that by more than 2 FPS. (This change doesn't affect you if you aren't using a custom bag addon.)

Version 2.8.3

Wrath Classic: The new gems for Content Phase 3 (Cardinal Ruby, etc.) will now show up in recommendations, and will be taken into account when determining the value of sockets on high-level gear.

Version 2.8.2

Dragonflight: Dragonflight 10.1.0 has a game bug that was causing Pawn to show the wrong information on "currently equipped" tooltips. That bug is fixed in Dragonflight 10.1.5. Pawn will stop annotating "currently equipped" tooltips until 10.1.5 launches.
Dragonflight: Added support for the 10.1.5 PTR.
Dragonflight: Added support for Augmentation Evokers. If you're using Pawn in Automatic mode (the default), you don't need to do anything extra. If you're using Pawn in Manual mode, you'll need to import your own Augmentation scale or use (shift-click) the one that comes with Pawn. (Stat weights for Augmentation aren't available yet so it's a placeholder in this version of Pawn.)

Version 2.8.1

Dragonflight: Fixed a problem that could occur when showing Pawn's version number on 10.1.0.

Version 2.8.0

Updated for Dragonflight: Embers of Neltharion (10.1.0).

Not really. One computer, same account, same SVs; don't use Pawn in main raid mod sets, only LFR. The potential exists that those gloves were vendored prior to or after doing LFR Spine, though (not the first time have been there for sure).

Had respeced my offspec from Ret to Holy for a couple of days for the first time in months; was on main spec tank in LFR there at the time. All Holy (& Ret) gear had was in backpacks. First time in there with a Holy offspec that can remember; that may have been a contributing factor.

Will try 1.5.20 and see if it reoccurs.

Okay, I can see how that might happen, at least theoretically. An upgrade dropped, and what Pawn previously thought was your best item for healing (Flash Freeze Gauntlets from Blackwing Descent) wasn't an item that your computer had item stats for from the server yet. I think that would only happen if you didn't actually own that item anymore (because you should always have the stats for items in your inventory and bank). For example, that could happen if you vendored or disenchanted those gloves using a different computer than the one you were playing on when you downed Spine of Deathwing. Does that sound similar to what happened?

I should have it fixed in 1.5.20. In that case, the new item will still show up as an upgrade, but Pawn just won't try (and fail) to show what item it's an upgrade for.

Error thrown on group loot roll frames in LFR

As per the subject: Pawn 1.5.19, USEng client/server, WoW 4.3.3.15354 live, 85 Paladin tank, standard Blizzard group loot roll frames appearing after killing Spine of Deathwing in LFR.

Have Pawn set to show its tooltip to suggest upgrade status on the loot roll frames. When the frames appeared (first time during the session; I joined the LFR with 2 bosses already dead), the Pawn tooltip appeared empty instead of showing data. And an error was thrown up:

Re: Where to find updated values for 4.3

Merry Christmas to you too! When in doubt I'd take updated EJ threads over the Wowhead numbers most anyday, so definitely you're on the right track. Creating your own scale isn't too hard. What I'd suggest is to start with the default Wowhead one even if you're not going to keep any of the numbers—that way you get a few paladin-specific settings automatically set for you, like the color pink for your numbers, a preference for plate after hitting level 50, the inability to use daggers, and so on. Go to the Scales tab in the Pawn UI, choose "Paladin: tank", and click Copy and choose a new name.

Then, go to the Values tab. For each stat in the list of stat values in your EJ thread, go to that stat in Pawn and type in the number. It doesn't matter if the numbers are in the 100s or in the 1s and 2s as long as they're consistent. Should just take a minute and be much simpler than figuring out how to get the bottoms of your columns to line up in a CSS layout.

There aren't a whole lot of guides that include an actual Pawn scale tag that can be pasted in, but as long as there's a table of stats and values you can use Pawn with it just fine.

Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: Shield vs Off-Hand

Hi! Does your shield show a value at all? Are you using one of the built-in Wowhead scales or one of your own?

Where to find updated values for 4.3

I am making my very first protection paladin so I've been reading from http://elitistjerks.com/f76/t126438-...end_me_my_way/

And

http://www.wowhead.com/guide=473/the...-tanking-stats

The Argument here is that EJ says that strength is the primary (for the latest patches), wowhead says it's stamina. I've read both arguments and agree with EJ. My problem is I can't find anywhere that people actually post new scales for pawn. Every website I find was last updated in 2009!!! (zOMG!!)

Is there a place where people actually share PAWN scales that are current?

Is there a guide or tutorial that shows how to make your own scales? I'd like to modify the scale it just seams overly complicated for me (And I spend my hours in HTML5, CSS3, SASS, SCSS modifying complicated calculations for clients websites - which is no simple task and perhaps more complicated than this!)

Can someone help point me in the right direction please?

Thanks,

VinUnleaded

P.S. Merry Christmas

Hi; no, unfortunately, since Pawn needs to read the text on tooltips to function properly, this version won't work at all in other languages. There are some translated versions available but I'm not aware of any in Portuguese.

Thanks for the explanation, and the clever workaround! I set up a couple extra scales just as you described and it works just fine, and gives values that look much more like I'd expect. Hooray!

I don't know of any issues off hand (har har har), but I think the issue there is probably that those nice jugs you have there are one-handed weapons so they don't get any value from either the MH DPS or the OH DPS stats, but rather the 1H DPS stats.

Pawn currently doesn't have a concept of giving one item a different value based on which hand it's going in, so it has to go based on the weapon type. I'm not really sure how to best handle a value scale with different MH/OH DPS values like that. :-/ But what some people do is to have two nearly identical scales, one for main hand weapons and one for off-hand weapons, and the only difference between them is that in one scale the value for one-handed weapon DPS is the main-hand DPS value and off-hand weapons are hidden entirely for that scale, and in the other scale the one-handed weapon DPS is the off-hand DPS value and everything EXCEPT one-hand weapons and off-hand weapons are hidden for that scale. Then you'd only get one value shown for each item, except one-hand items, which would show two separate values. Kind of a pain, but it works.

Are there any known issues with Pawn using the MH: DPS and OH: DPS values correctly? I plugged in the default Enhancement Shaman values from askmrrobot.com which makes use of both MH/OH dps and speed. Yet when I compared a lvl 187 mace with a Tremendous Tankard o' Terror, Pawn was telling me it was a mere 57% upgrade. If I instead used just "DPS" (not MH or OH specific), it showed a much greater percentage upgrade, which I'd expect.

Granted, I've been lazy and haven't manually calculated what it should be showing, just going by gut feeling that something is off...

Just a note, I may end up bringing it back for the inspect window. I just noticed in Well of Eternity last night while deciding how scared I should be of my tank that I don't have a way to see how poorly geared my groupmates are now.

In Cataclysm there are no epic 346s or blue 353s; there seems to just be the one item level number. It's nicer and simpler.)
