Pawn  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.8.11
by: VgerAN [More]

Find upgrades, do more damage, win.

Pawn helps you find upgrades for your gear and tell which of two items is better for your spec. Start with built-in advice from Ask Mr. Robot, or customize Pawn's stat weights to have it suggest items based on your favorite class guide or simulator. Pawn can help you decide whether it's better to use the cloak with 500 mastery or the one with 450 crit—whether you're just starting out, or you're an advanced player who plans out gear upgrades and regularly simulates and evaluates performance.

Getting started

If you're new to Pawn, don't worry—Pawn will automatically set itself up to give you advice based on math done by the experts at Ask Mr. Robot (or, on Classic, HawsJon). Just watch for Pawn's green arrows. If you decide you want to go further, there are a lot of ways that you can customize Pawn, by tracking multiple specs at once, importing custom stat weights, and more.

Language support

Pawn now works with all languages on both live/retail and Classic. It's possible that you might run into stats that Pawn doesn't recognize from time to time when playing on non-English clients—if you think that Pawn's not calculating something right, put an item into the Compare tab and see if it lists all of the stats there. If something's missing, let me know which item and which language, and I should be able to get it fixed!

Staying in touch

Become a fan of Vger on Facebook and get updates of new versions and stuff like that. You can also leave questions or comments there if you don't have an account on this site. (I typically respond to questions much more quickly on Facebook or Curse.)

Found a bug?

If you think you might have found a bug, just leave a comment here. In addition to a description of the problem, please make sure to include: (1) the language that you use Pawn and WoW in, (2) whether it's live/retail or Classic, (3) the specific items that don't work as expected, and (4) your class and spec if you're using the built-in (not custom) stat weights. Screenshots are usually very helpful as well.

Incompatible with...

Pawn will not work with Titan Panel Artifact Power or Combat Numbers Separator. Those addons change item tooltips and will cause Pawn to give bad advice. It's also been reported that using Pawn with TradeSkillMaster can cause the game to crash or hang.

Version 2.8.11

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for those new hit and crit stats, again. Because Blizzard broke them in a patch.

Version 2.8.10

Classic Season of Discovery: Added support for the new Gnomeregan items with hit or crit to all attacks. Items with the new hit stat will receive points for your Hit and Hit (Spell) stats, and items with the new crit stat will receive points for your Crit and Crit (Spell) stats.

Version 2.8.9

Dragonflight: Updated stat weights for all classes and specs.
Dragonflight: Updated Pawn's scale color button to work with the new patch 10.2.5 color picker.

Version 2.8.8

Dragonflight: Removed the "Only show upgrades for my best armor type after level 27" option. After level 27, Pawn will now always stop showing items that are not the right type of armor for your class.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would suggest armor your character can't wear as upgrades.
Classic: Fixed a bug where Pawn would sometimes suggest socketing Glinting Flame Spessarite when it meant to suggest Sovereign Shadow Draenite. This bug potentially affected any time Glinting Flame Spessarite was suggested (such as in the socketing advisor popup), but didn't affect any other calculations or upgrade suggestions.

Version 2.8.7

Classic: Added support for the Classic trade skill and crafting window: hovering over the item icon in that window should now work the same as if the item were already in your bags.

Version 2.8.6

Dragonflight: More new stat weight updates, updated for patch 10.2.0.

Version 2.8.5

Dragonflight: New stat weights have been included for all classes and specs, including all evoker specs, based on the latest Ask Mr. Robot raid simulation data.

Version 2.8.4

To keep things responsive, especially on the slower Classic versions of the game, Pawn has a new system that caps how much processing power it will allow bag addons to use when calculating which items get green upgrade arrows. Roughly speaking, if the game runs at 60 FPS for you, Pawn will block bag addons from reducing that by more than 2 FPS. (This change doesn't affect you if you aren't using a custom bag addon.)

Version 2.8.3

Wrath Classic: The new gems for Content Phase 3 (Cardinal Ruby, etc.) will now show up in recommendations, and will be taken into account when determining the value of sockets on high-level gear.

Version 2.8.2

Dragonflight: Dragonflight 10.1.0 has a game bug that was causing Pawn to show the wrong information on "currently equipped" tooltips. That bug is fixed in Dragonflight 10.1.5. Pawn will stop annotating "currently equipped" tooltips until 10.1.5 launches.
Dragonflight: Added support for the 10.1.5 PTR.
Dragonflight: Added support for Augmentation Evokers. If you're using Pawn in Automatic mode (the default), you don't need to do anything extra. If you're using Pawn in Manual mode, you'll need to import your own Augmentation scale or use (shift-click) the one that comes with Pawn. (Stat weights for Augmentation aren't available yet so it's a placeholder in this version of Pawn.)

Version 2.8.1

Dragonflight: Fixed a problem that could occur when showing Pawn's version number on 10.1.0.

Version 2.8.0

Updated for Dragonflight: Embers of Neltharion (10.1.0).

gems

hey,
im using this addon but im quite unsure about the gems with my dk.
I assume i give the sockets a value of (strengh from gem)* Strengh value.
thats ~44 according to my EP values - but it doesnt change anything on the gear output. It stays the same value as with no entry at the sockets at all.
Is there a default value calculated or how does it work?

I guess i do some wrong thinking and missed to activate an option or something like that.

Thanks for helping!

Crash narrowed down? Kinda...

I had the crash - Installed Pawn, WoW crash to desktop (do you want to send a report? ...) when I tried to log in. Disable Pawn, can log in. Re-enable Pawn, crash to desktop.

I decided to narrow it down to see what was conflicting. I disabled all mods except for Pawn and logged in fine.

I then re-enabled mods to see where the conflict was, and it was gone. I was able to re-enable all mods, PLUS Pawn, and log in.

So if you're crashing after installing Pawn, try this:
- Disable all mods but Pawn, log in, log out.
- Re-enable all your mods, including Pawn, log in.

Hope this helps!

Outfitter's alternate-outfit tooltips are the first ones that I actually like using myself. They're making it WAY easier to build up my feral druid's horrible, horrible healing gear set.

Outfitter Tooltips

I've noticed that Outfitter has added tooltips that show your alternate outfits in comparisons, even when not equipped.

However, neither Pawn or RatingBuster seem to "read" this tooltip, and neither show inside of it.

Would it be possible to show Pawn inside these Outfitter tooltips?

I know nothing of AddOns, I only use them, heh.

:]

I've contacted the WowMatrix folks. The Pawn license allows for free redistribution of unmodified versions, but if they need me to post updates to yet another place, I can probably manage that. Thanks for the suggestion.

Both Curse and Wowinterface have blocked wowmatrix, so that addons cannot be update with it. This forces all players who use that utility to hand-install addons. If an addon is licensed with a free license like GPL, wowmatrix will be able store the addon on their servers, allowing people to update it automatically. Or you (the author) can simply contact them (wowmatrix dot com) and just give them permission to store it on there servers.

There are a *lot* of people who use wowmatrix. Many guilds require members to run it before starting wow for raids.

*please* consider letting wowmatrix work with your addon. There will be no change to code.

thanks

Well, good to hear. Maybe Blizzard found their bug from the crash reports people submitted and have fixed it in 3.1. At least I can hope...

That's indeed strange. Someone on Curse also reported something pretty similar and I ran out of ideas of things to suggest—if you've deleted the Pawn SavedVariables for that character and the problem still occurs, you've covered just about everything I could suggest. Can you try disabling all of your other mods and just running Pawn and see if that affects things? It's unlikely to make a difference since it works just fine on your other characters, but just in case, it's worth checking.

Very odd...

I have the strangest experience with Pawn.

I use it on 3 characters, same account, same realm.
All of a sudden, for no particular reason, pawn never shows me the values on one of the characters. The other 2 works fine but not the third one.
And the mystery gets even worse. All three characters use the same addons. None of them uses more or less addons.
Pawn button shows up in the character window as usual but compare tab doesn't work. Debug info doesn't show me much either, just item name and a long line of ..... after them in chat window. But no values according to the scales.
I tried deleting the failing characters savedvariables, still don't work. Tried deleting the scales and redo them, still nothing, not even the pawn default scale. I even tried coying savedvariables and scales from the characters that Pawn works for... And still nothing. LOL
This is making me so confused... Why would my hunters item tooltips suddenly not show the pawn values when the other 2 characters works just fine.

So you're seeing something other than Feral AP = (DPS - 55) * 14 in your calculations?

If I can get a reliable formula that allows me to calculate an item's feral attack power contribution without relying on the line that druids see on tooltips, I'll probably add the stat back to Pawn. But as it stands, I'm not really comfortable with allowing people to assign values to a stat that only shows up when you're playing a certain class. It's just confusing and weird, and prevents you from properly valuing items when you're on your non-druid characters.

Is there some way instead of a feral AP line we could get one to set a value to the extra line Blizz adds for druids that lists how much AP we get from the DPS conversion? I just crunched some numbers while trying to figure out a weight for it and the DPS->AP conversion's got an ilvl factor in there too. It doesn't vary *hugely* between 226 and 213 (or 213 and 200) but it's definitely there. I don't know if it's even possible to pull the number out of that though since it's not an actual stat per se, haven't actually tried looking at Pawn's code.
