NeedToKnow: Simple, effective timer bars

Track specific buffs, debuffs, and cooldowns with bars that always appear in the same place in the same color. NeedToKnow is great for short buffs and debuffs you use a lot. For example, a rogue could show bars for Slice and Dice, Rupture, and Garrote.

  • Easy to set up
  • Works with spells, abilities, items, totems, procs, and internal cooldowns
  • Track more than one spell or ability with one bar
  • Works with Retail and Classic WoW

Other features
  • Save setups for different specializations
  • Track by name or spell ID
  • Show cast time indicator to see when to refresh buffs and debuffs before they finish
  • Make bars deplete at same rate to see which will finish first
  • Blink bars when buff or debuff missing
  • Track buffs on raid members without having to focus them

Instructions

General options are available in the Blizzard interface options menu. You can type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. To configure individual bars, right click them while unlocked. Bars work while locked. If you only see full bars that aren't changing in response to anything, they are unlocked! Just type /ntk to lock them and get them working for you.

You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab.

When entering your settings, be careful with your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever.

On each bar you can enter in multiple buffs/debuffs deliminated by commas. They are prioritized according to order.
i.e. "Rake, Lacerate" - If both are applied, will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate
i.e "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" - Good way to track single instance curses

If you wish to use SpellID, make sure you are using the correct one!

FAQ

Why won't NeedToKnow work for me? I set it up but the bars just sit there at full, not moving or tracking anything.
The bars only time things when the addon is locked. Type "/needtoknow" or "/ntk" to lock/unlock the addon. You can also use the buttons in the AddOns tab of the Blizzard Interface Options menu.
Why won't NeedToKnow track this buff/debuff? It works for other things.
Check your spelling and capitalization. Also remember that buffs and debuffs sometimes have different names than the items and abilities that apply them. The Death Knight ability Icy Touch, for example, applies a DoT called Frost Fever. If you're using a SpellID, make sure you have the correct one.
How do I track multiple buffs or debuffs on a single bar?
Enter the name of each buff/debuff separated by commas. They are prioritized according to order. For example, "Rake, Lacerate" will display Rake until it expires and then it will track Lacerate. "Curse of Recklessness, Curse of Exhaustion, Curse of Shadows" is a good way to track single-instance curses.
How do I get more bars?
You can enable more groups of bars by going into the Interface settings off the main menu and choosing the AddOns tab. If four groups of six bars isn't enough for you, consider another timer bar addon. Also consider rethinking your UI.
How do I get NeedToKnow to track my own DoTs but not those applied by other members of my class?
Select "Only show if cast by self" in the bar's configuration menu.

Is there a way to duplicate one of the two spec profiles without deleting the existing inactive spec profile, or do I have no choice but to delete whichever alternate spec profile I'm not currently using and duplicate my currently active spec profile and then assign it to the other spec after I switch to it?

Also, I've noticed that even if the settings have been previously hard-saved (as in saved on logout/exit of the game client to a physical file), if I reload my UI, any bars that are cooldown types revert to appending "CD" to them, and lose any time format choices I made, as well as all four groups being made active regardless of how many groups I had active previously.

Those are exported settings from my ui. To use them: Highlight the text in the code snippet and copy it (Ctrl+c or whatever.) Go into wow, get NTK into config mode, right click on a bar, and choose Import/Export bar settings. Then paste the text from the code snippet (Ctrl+V or whatever.) Then hit the accept button and that bar should look and act like mine does (Don't forget to put NTK back into play mode.)
Excellent, thank you very much

Just separate the names with commas.

Yeah, there's a bar type for internal cooldowns. NTK even has a special feature just for Balance druids where you can reset the Nature's Grace bar when Eclipse procs. I'll try to remember to post more detailed instructions when I get home.

Specifically, moonfire/sunfire. it's the same button for druids, just depends on what eclipse state you're in. I havent found an option to do this yet.

Also, is there a way to track the internal cooldown of something, such as Nature's Grace?

You're welcome!

Re More groups: Definitely. I'm not sure when I will do this, but it's definitely on the "short list" if you will. Also here Ticket 63.

Re Square Bars: I'm not sure why you can't make them square now. The minimum width, maybe? What would you do with a really small square, though? You wouldn't be able to see the timer bar hardly at all.

Re filling vertically: I am not inclined to add support for all the possible ways of laying out the bars. I want to keep NTK small and fast. One thing I have considered is allowing a group rotation, like I talk about in Ticket 14. I wanted to do the "more groups" feature first, since the UI for per-group settings will have to be revamped to support it.

Hello Kitjan and thank you for an amazing addon, it's very effective.

There are some things I would love to see done with the addon. If you could add more than 4 groups, that would be great.

I am trying to make square bars, but all I can do is to make it rectangular...is it possible to change this?

One last thing, is it possible to have the bars fill up vertically? Instead of left or right or viscera, maybe fulling from the bottom up. Thank you!

If tweaking the bar background, bar padding, and bar spacing isn't enough to get what you want, open a ticket with some mockups of what you're trying to do with kgPanels and I'll help you out. kgPanels actually sounds like a pretty good way to extend NTKs border/panel look.

Glad you figured it out The issue is that NTK treats those commas as separating names for bars that watch multiple spells.

I'm not sure if this has been asked before, but is there a way to get NTK to properly track the Ready, Set, Aim... buff? I've got the buff set to the exact name as one would normally do, but NTK just can't seem to track this buff. I have ComboPointsRedux to show me the stacks visually, but I use NTK to show me the time remaining before the stacks expire. Or at least I'd like to.

Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you for your time!

No, NTK can only track ICDs from effects that buff the player right now.
