World of Warcraft Talent Planner v3.10

Talent Planner adds planning capabilities to the talent frame. Left clicking on a talent increases (and right clicking decreases) your planned rank for that talent. If the talent preview interface option is enabled, control left and right clicking increase/decrease the preview rank; otherwise, control left clicking actually buys the talent. For all intents and purposes, preview mode is treated by Talent Planner as if you actually have the previewed talents, except that you can change them on the fly. Talent Planner fully supports dual spec: each spec has their own separate set of talent goals, etc. Slash commands all act on the "current" spec, i.e. the spec you are currently viewing. Note that you can make changes to the inactive talent goals without switching specs.

The talents are color coded to indicate their status (see below) and a description of the planned rank is added to the tooltip. It's similar in nature to the talent calculators on the Blizzard website, but slightly more complicated because it needs to show you not only what talents you've planned but also what you currently have. The bottom right numbers are your current rank/max rank. The bottom left number is your goal rank.

There are several states a talent can be in, each with its own color.

If you do not currently have points to spend:

Grey: You have not planned any ranks in this talent but you could do so.
Blue: You have planned some ranks in this talent, but not to its maximum.
Purple: You have planned to max this talent out.
Gold: You have maxed out this talent.
Red: You have more ranks in this talent than you had planned.

Additionally, if you have one or more points to spend:

Cyan: You have not planned any ranks in this talent, but you could still spend a point on it if you want.
Green: You have planned some ranks in this talent and can now spend a point on it.

Slash commands:

/tp or /planner [help]
Shows this help text.

/tp or /planner standby
Enables/Disables the mod.

/tp or /planner reset
Clears your talent goals for your current spec.

/tp or /planner current
Sets your talent goals to those talents you currently have.

/tp or /planner save <name>
Saves your current goals under the name <name>.
If there is already a saved set with that name, this will overwrite it.

/tp or /planner load <name>
Loads the goals saved as <name>. This will overwrite your current goals.

/tp or /planner rename <old> <new>
Renames the goals saved as <old> to <new>.

/tp or /planner import <name> <alt> [realm]
Imports the goals saved as <name> from the alt named <alt> on realm [realm].

/tp or /planner delete <name>
Deletes the set saved as <name>.

/tp or /planner list [alt] [realm]
Lists saved goals for the alt named [alt] on realm [realm] or for yourself if no alt specified.

Future plans:

1. Add support for pet talent trees.

2. Make the colors configurable. Some may not agree with my color choices, seeing as how I have no artistic sense whatsoever.

3. Allow for alt-viewing. Currently it only shows the tree for the current character. It would be a pain to store all the textures and whatnot in order to be able to view one character's talent goals on another character in the normal graphical talent pane, but perhaps a text listing would work.

4. Allow all three talent trees to be seen at once.

I do plan to update Talent Planner for 3.1 when it comes out. I tend not to follow the PTRs because the talents change so often and it requires a lot of work to keep up. I like to wait until it goes live because then I only have to data mine once.

That all being said, I'll try to find time in the near future to get on the PTR and at least make sure it still works with all of the changes that have gone into the talent frame. I likely won't release a PTR version, but I'll try to have the live version ready to go when the patch ships.

Are there any plans for making this addon compatible with 3.1 PTR/Live client? I know Blizzard has a built in "preview" of sorts, but it has a very glaring flaw: you can't "plan" your way to 80 and fill in the missing points as you level. You can only plan to your current level and then fill in points afterwards.

The current version still allows you to select your "planning path", but you can't see the talents light up. They remain visibly as if they had not been selected, and only the mouseover tooltip gives an indication of your planning path (which makes the addon useless due to bugs/conflicts ATM).

I'd rather have your addon, which can also save separate sets for later swapping/learning, than the built in preview. Sort of how the equipment manager fails compared to itemrack/outfitter, especially in the paperdoll "click to equip" department (you still need to right click items in your bag or drag/drop them to a slot to get EqM to see them).

Thanks, guess I'll give it a try then. It is always a hassle to alt tab to those talent builds. =/

@Zyland: That's the idea. You can plan out a build, save it, plan out another build, save that, and then switch between the two of them at will. Then when you reset your talents you can pick one of your saved builds and see in-game what talents you planned to buy for that build.

Just making sure I have this right, but if I had this addon, it would allow me to save (for instance) two different talent builds, so that when I actually go to reset my talents, I don't have to alt tab to find the build?

Miss my Special Talent. This seems like a perfect replacement, simple and easy. Would ask for full rank UI, and possibly full rank / tree UI.

I don't have any plans to add hunter pet talents support. If there is enough demand for it I'll look into it, though.

It is not currently possible to have it auto-buy your talents for you. I get asked for this feature a lot, but I don't have any plans for it.

New version of Planner is up for WoW 3.0.3.

@MrDummy: There is a command line option to reset your talents. You can use that, if you like, to reset your talents to zero whenever a patch comes out or whatever.

There is verification logic to make sure you don't plan more than the max rank, but it might not check to see if you are past that point. I will look into adding code for this.

As for not being able to manually lower talent goals for talents that have had their ranks removed, the issue is probably that you haven't spent enough points to get to a talent you've planned for further down the tree. I can't automatically remove the 2 points on a talent that went from 5 to 3 ranks because then you have talents planned that you can't actually get and the whole thing breaks down. If this happens, you have two options: 1) reset your talents with /tp reset 2) manually remove goals for talents further down the tree until it lets you take the extra points off the talent you're having a problem with. I don't think I should automatically do #1 for you, and I can't do #2 for you, so this issue requires you to do some of the work. I will see about adding some kind of warning so you know that this is the case and which talents are affected.

New information! It seems Talent Planner has no good internal verification code.

For example: I have saved settings Talent Planner in 2.4.x before 3.x change. That means the skills are already planned.
When 3.x is active, some skills have another numbers. Example: 5 points is now 3 points in some skills.
Talent Planner checks only maximum value. Above 3 points (thus 5 points) it can counts up to unbelieveable 10 points... Yes, no good checking code to prevent faulty points.
And when i correct it by hand to 3 points, sometimes it blocks at 4 points. I cannot always lower. It seems in another skills the points are in the way. Remove some points solves it sometimes.

But actually, Talent Planner doesn't fix the wrong points in some skills. It doesn't reset some values because the different talent tree.

To make Planner useful, you should just reset all planned values when talent tree is changed by Blizzard, or fix it with built-in database max points for each skill. Planner can give you the warning because the planned points are invalid and must be fixed or resetted.

Only if you start from zero planned points, it works. But not with already planned points. The addon overlook it very easy without good verification code. That is the weakness of Planner code.

It's okay, 10 silver is not painful.
After reaction of GM, the problem with talent tree is not officially reported, thus that means the addon causes the problem.
I shall look better out in next time when another problem is found in the GUI.
Keep good work

@Silent: I did just find another small bug where the player's goal rank indicators were showing on the pet tab, and v3.2 is up to fix that bug. But I'm not experiencing any problems spending pet talents or seeing any problems with the talent line showing the wrong data; as a matter of fact, v3.1 was created to fix bugs that sound very much like the ones you described. What version of Talent Planner are you using?

@Mike: Once again, I don't see the usefulness of showing the info you have there, and after playing with it a bit, I still don't like how it looks and works. I'm sorry if my mod doesn't do exactly what you want it to do, but this is not a change I'm going to make.

@Dummy: It's unfortunate that you had to talk to a GM and that you lost 10 silver due to a bug. In the future, if you have a problem with something in WoW and you have downloaded a mod that affects that same part of WoW, it would probably save you a lot of money if you disabled the mod when you found the problem so you could see if that was where the problem was coming from. If that bug was, as you say, a bit too annoying, I sincerely hope you are able to find another mod that works better for you.

Pet Talent Bug

Yea, there's a bug in the hunter pet talent line. Works with all my other characters to include my hunter but the pet talent line shows a 51 point talent build with the inability to clear the tree to reuse the points. The only way to accomplish this is to disable the addon. Even after redoing the pet tree and turning the addon back on, it goes back to the look it had before. A 51 point tree in talents that were never selected. A favorite addon of mine until this came up. Good thing this is a minor alt.
