  • Enables arrow keys without the Alt key (*)
  • Enables resizing chat frames by their edges
  • Makes all channels sticky (**)
  • Makes URLs clickable for easy copying
  • Moves the input box above the chat frame
  • Sets the delay time for chat text fading
  • Stops docked chat tabs from being dragged
  • Hides the scroll, menu, and social buttons

(*) As of Patch 5.4 using Up/Down to access previously entered chat lines without the Alt key is limited to non-secure commands only. If you need to access previously entered secure commands (like /cast or /use) you will still need to hold the Alt key.

(**) If a channel is sticky, then after talking in that channel, the chat input box will open to the same chat type again, rather than making you type “/g” or “/ra” again.

Options & Commands
  • Type “/pchat” for options, or find them in the Interface Options.
  • Type “/pchat clear” to clear all chat windows.
  • Type “/tt" or “/wt” to send a whisper to your current target.
Some additional options, such as customizing which channels are made sticky and what abbreviations are used for channel names, are available by editing the Core.lua file in a plain-text editor such as Notepad. If you break something, download a fresh copy and try again.

  • Fixed URL linking to not cause taint

Version 3.3.5.94
  • Upgraded beta series to release status; see the beta series changelogs below for details on what was changed since the previous release version.
  • You should delete your previously installed version of PhanxChat before installing this version. Otherwise, you’ll end up with unused files laying around on your hard drive.
  • Your old settings will not be converted. You may want to delete your old saved variables file before installing this version. Otherwise, you’ll end up with unused data in your saved variables.

Version 3.3.5.93-beta
  • Fixed custom abbreviations for numbered channel names
  • Added filtering of "changed channel" messages

Version 3.3.5.91-beta
  • Fixed the Fade Time option

Version 3.3.5.90-beta

Version 3.3.5.89-beta
  • Significantly improved performance when using the Shorten Channel Names option
  • Fixed "Dungeon Guide" not being abbreviated
  • Added advanced configuration support for specifying abbreviations for custom channels

Version 3.3.5.86-beta
  • Fixed non-numbered channel links (eg. Guild, Party)

Version 3.3.5.85-beta
  • Due to file changes, you should completely uninstall your existing copy of the addon before installing this version. Removing your old saved variables is recommended, but not required.
  • This is a full rewrite of PhanxChat. It is now semi-modular, so it should be much easier for me to maintain. The old single-file organization was becoming quite unwieldy.
  • Added a Shorten Player Names feature, which shortens player names by removing realm names from cross-realm players and last names from Real ID players.
  • Removed the Auto Start Chat Log feature, because I never used it.
  • Removed the Color Player Names feature, because it was just too much code and performance overhead to color the very few types of messages that the default UI doesn’t already color, and also confused all the <insert adjective here> people who never read patch notes or change logs.
  • Advanced Configuration has been revamped. Options relevant to individual modules are in the appropriate module file, not in the Core file.
  • All existing translations for the configuration UI have been discarded, since none of them had been updated since the transition from slash commands to a GUI over a year ago. If you can provide translations for any locale, please send me a PM.
  • Additionally, several chat channels are currently only shortened in English locales, because nobody has provided translations for them. If you see a channel name that isn’t shortened, please report: your locale (eg. "deDE"), the English name of the channel (eg. "General"), the localized name of the channel (eg. "Allgemein"), and an appropriate short form for your locale (eg. "A").

Version 3.3.5.80
  • Added message processing for Real ID whispers
  • Fixed tell-target functionality to work for cross-realm players
  • Fixed repeat-message filtering to actually respect the line threshold
  • Fixed visual handling of temporary frames
  • Fixed several typo-related errors
  • Updated configuration

Version 3.3.5.73
  • Fixed a bug preveing the new Battle.net "toast" window from being shown
  • Fixed a bug relating to sticky channel selection

Version 3.3.5.72
  • Updated for patch 3.3.5. Not backwards compatible!
  • Added an “Enable resize edges” option to add resize controls along all edges of chat frames, and remove the bottom-left-corner resize arrow. This basically just restores pre-3.3.5 chat frame resizing functionality.
  • Added a “Hide extra textures” option to hide the extra textures on chat tabs and chat edit boxes added in patch 3.3.5.
  • Removed the “Enable mousewheel scrolling” option, since this functionality is now provided by the default UI.
  • Modified the default UI’s mousewheel scrolling to scroll more lines at a time, page up/down on ctrl, and top/bottom on shift.
  • Fixed a bug preventing custom short channel name formats from using the channel name in addition to the channel number.
  • Translations are needed for the new options in all locales. Also, major revisions are needed for several locales. If you can assist with translations for any locale, please send me a PM.

Version 3.3.3.68
  • Fixed an bug that caused the player’s own repeated messages to be hidden

Version 3.3.3.67-beta
  • Fixed an error that caused tab flashing to not always be disabled

Version 3.3.3.66-beta
  • Fixed an error caused by a misnamed variable
  • Added missing config library

Version 3.3.3.64-beta
  • The "Dungeon Guide" title is now abbreviated
  • Repeat-message suppression is now case-insensitive and ignores spaces
  • The configuration panel has been rearranged, and the wording of several options improved
  • Translations for all locales need to be reviewed

Version 3.3.0.60
  • Repeat message suppression now looks at the last 15 lines (up from 10)
  • Fixed repeat message suppression option

Version 3.3.0.57
  • Update for WoW 3.3

Version 3.2.0.53
  • Added checks to prevent errors caused by other addons that haven’t been updated for 3.2, because I’m tired of hearing about them
  • Fixed suppression options again
  • Changed from hardcoded class name translations to new FillLocalizedClassList API

Version 3.2.0.51
  • Updated class coloring for WoW 3.2
  • PhanxChat’s class color option now only colors player names in message types that are not colored by the default UI. To enable class coloring in other message types, use the default UI’s chat options window and enable the option for every message type you want class coloring for.
  • If your locale has not yet patched to 3.2, do not update yet!

Fix for numbers next to names

Ok, I've patched this on my system. If you'd like to fix your own copy while waiting on the author to update this officially, read on. This fix enables the name coloring in chat. Siz' version just skips coloring the names.

Step 1) Open up PhanxChat.toc and change Interface from 20000 to 20100. This will make it no longer say it's out of date.

Step 2) Now open up PhanxChat.lua (if you have a different version of phanx than I do, you may need to open core.lua instead to find the lines I list below).

Step 2a) Go to line 38, which starts with
Code:
self:RegisterEvent("CHAT_MSG_SYSTEM"
Somewhere in the middle of that line, you should see
Code:
string.find(arg1, "^|Hplayer:%w+|h%[(%w+)%]|h:
Change that to
Code:
string.find(arg1, "^|Hplayer:%w+:%d+|h%[(%w+)%]|h:
(note that I added the ":%d+")

Step 2b) Go to line 100, which starts with
Code:
local n = string.gsub(
Find
Code:
|Hplayer:(.-)|h
in the middle of the line and change it to
Code:
|Hplayer:(.-):%d+|h
(again, I added the ":%d+")

Step 2c) Go to line 113, which starts with
Code:
msg = string.gsub(msg,
Find
Code:
 |Hplayer:(.-)|h
on that line and change it to
Code:
 |Hplayer:(.-):%d+|h
Step 3) Restart WoW or reload your UI.

Done!

If your line numbers don't match mine exactly, don't worry. Version differences may cause that and its no reason to worry or think the fix won't work - just find the line that matches

And finally.. this is a temporary fix. It throws away the "lineID" which is the number you are seeing, but that number is needed for some spam reporting. However, this shouldn't pose a problem since PhanxChat won't throw away the lineID unless it already knows the person, and spammers don't usually hang around...

READ the replies and do as Siz suggested. That is your best bet. The mod works fine for me after doing that.

Any chance of this getting updated? I prefer this chat mod above all others and right now its bugged out and showing numbers behind every line of chat. Like:

[Guild]Me:1: Blah Blah Blah
[Guild]You:2: Blah BLah blah
[Trade]Me:3: BLah blah blah

Nothing I can do will get it to fix, can someone please either update this mod, or hotfix it so it will stop with the numbers?

I see it too. The number seems to be the unique ID assigned to every character that is encountered. This ID would help keep track of the person's class so that the name could be colored.

I just commented out the offending section of code in the PhanxChat:AddMessage function.
Code:
function PhanxChat:AddMessage(f, msg, r, g, b, id)
	if msg and msg ~= "" then

		if self.db.profile.strings == "Short" then
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-General%]", "[%1/GEN]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-Trade%]", "[%1/TRD]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-LocalDefense%]", "[%1/LD]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-WorldDefense%]", "[%1/WD]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-GuildRecruitment%]", "[%1/GR]")
		elseif self.db.profile.strings == "None" then
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-General%]", "[%1]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-Trade%]", "[%1]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-LocalDefense%]", "[%1]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-WorldDefense%]", "[%1]")
			msg = string.gsub(msg, "%[(%d)%..-GuildRecruitment%]", "[%1]")
		end
--[[
		local n = string.gsub(msg, ".*|Hplayer:(.-)|h.*", "%1")
		local b

		if self.db.profile.names.color then
			n = self:GetColoredName(n)
		end

		if self.db.profile.names.brackets then
			b = "|Hplayer:%1|h"..n.."|h"
		else
			b = "[|Hplayer:%1|h"..n.."|h]"
		end

		msg = string.gsub(msg, "|Hplayer:(.-)|h%[.-%]|h(.-:-)", b.."%2")
]]--
		msg = self:MarkURL(msg)
	end
	self.hooks[f]["AddMessage"](f, msg, r, g, b, id)
end

Having a little issue with chat lines.
I keep getting a counter number after each line is displayed.
Have I missed something on these forums that I should know about? It's quite annoying.

Everything else, though, works wonderfully.
Great addon.

Well Phanx I do not think it is a waste for it to save across sessions at all. Mainly because colouring of player names give this mod and many others similar to it a real aesthetic value, not to mention it makes the chat box a lot easier to read, for me anyways.

The fact that it does not save in between sessions is nothing more than a minor annoyance at best yes but it does get old after awhile having to check off-line members and scroll through.

And about the off-line members and scrolling through part. I mention that because anytime a new guildie comes on-line their name won't be coloured because simply clicking the guild tab wont work, you have to check "show off-line" members and see them that way. So if I want all of the guild members names coloured throughout my entire session (which is up to 4-5 hours at a time sometimes) I'd rather just scroll through all the off-line members as well when I first log in and get it all done at once.

Also I notice that shift-clicking a person in general chat so it shows that players info displayed in the chat box that will not make their names colour, you have to open the actual /who window and do it that way, I believe this is a bug? Because the "ChatBox" mod does not require you to open the /who window, shift clicking their name and the info showing up in the chat window is fine.

All in all it is a great mod and I've been using it for awhile but the not saving character names across sessions has always annoyed me to some extent. If you could add the support so that it will I would love you for it more than I already do for this great chat box mod

First, double-check that it's enabled - use "/pc sticky" to toggle it off/on. If it still isn't working, try disabling any other chat-related addons. Officer chat sticky works for me, so either it's turned off or something is conflicting.

Jackalantern:
By design it does not save players between sessions. IMO it's a waste of memory to save them. However, I'm not sure why you're having to go to your guild tab and view offline members and scroll through it all to get your guild members' names colored; the only times I've ever had to even open the guild tab (and that's all you should have to do - just open it) was when someone new joined the guild, to color their name.

What other names is it not coloring? It can't color all the names in general chat -- it isn't magic, and can't know what class someone is until you actually see the person (mouseover them, target them, /who them, etc.).

Why doesn't Phanx Chat save players as far as colouring their names go? Everytime I want my guildies names to be colored with their appropriate class I have to go to guild tab and check show all off-line members, then scroll through it all.

This is the same for anyone not just guild members.

Other than that annoyance it is a great mod.

Umm.... chat fading controls are already in, and have been for almost three weeks now?

Phanx, thanks for the update. I'll beat a drum in a GMs ear and see if we can't move closer to getting this dealt with in a patch.
