Separated Addon Packages

Due to the total size of our addon is increasing bigger and bigger since we are having more and more maps, we have heard many users complaining about the download issue, and suggested us to find some workaround.
We have discussed internally our final decision is to separate our built-in plugins into individual addon packages (also individual addon projects).

Also, we have moved out the old dungeon maps and re-categorized them based on the expansion set. For example, Burning Crusade dungeon maps are now only available in another addon package.

This provide the flexibility of addon downloading. Users who don't need any specific plugin or expansion dungeon maps can decide not to download them. Or, those plugins and old dungeon maps won't get frequently updated, therefore, users who have download all the Atlas addon packages don't need to download all the packages each time when there is a new release.

About Atlas

For some reason, Blizzard decided to include beautiful maps for every area of Azeroth except instances. You can still see the area surrounding you in the minimap when you're in an instance, but never the overall layout of the entire dungeon. This is where Atlas comes in. The core of Atlas is basically an image viewer. However, it's the images that come with Atlas that make it worthwhile: a map for every instance in the game. Furthermore, the maps are marked with the locations of bosses and other points of interest. Atlas also includes maps of battlegrounds, dungeon locations, flight points, and outdoor raid bosses.

After installing Atlas, you'll notice a new icon on the minimap that looks like part of a little globe (you can right-click the icon to drag it around the minimap's frame). Click this icon to open up the main Atlas window, which displays the maps and legend. You can alternatively use the slash-command /atlas. The drop-downs at the top of the window enable you to navigate between the maps. You can also drag the Atlas window around the screen. Lock it in place with the little lock button in the upper-right corner.

At the bottom of the legend is a small text-entry field as well as Search and Reset buttons. Type part of a word or name in the box and click the Search button, and the legend's entries are reduced to only those that match your text. Note that the search is performed only on the entries for the current map, not all the entries in the database. While not so useful for instances with only a few entries like Ragefire Chasm, the search comes in handy when there are a ton of entries, like for Blackrock Depths or the AtlasMajorCities plug-in. If you want to get the whole list back, just click Reset.

Configuration

Atlas has a few simple options, accessible from the Options button in the upper-right corner of the main window, or with the slash-command /atlas options. A few of the settings aren't very self-explanatory so here's some more information about them.
  • "Auto-Select Instance Map" detects the instance that you're in when you open Atlas, and then automatically switches to the appropriate map. This feature doesn't work in instances that have more than one map, like Blackrock Spire, Dire Maul, or many of the Outland instances. In this case, Atlas remembers the last map you had open.
  • "Right-Click for World Map" makes the World Map open when you right-click anywhere on the Atlas window. This is useful when you want to quickly switch from Atlas to the World Map.
  • "Clamp Window to Screen" makes it so that you can't drag the Atlas window off the edge of the screen. The rest of the options are pretty straightforward. The Reset Position button is useful if the Atlas window ever gets dragged completely off-screen and you can't get it back.

3rd Parties Atlas Plugins

Atlas has a built-in plugin system allowing for the easy addition of map packs. In fact, Atlas ships with four of these plugins (for battlegrounds, dungeon locations, flight points, and outdoor raid bosses). If you're interested in making your own Atlas map pack, I suggest you start with one of these four as a guide. You can contact me or post on the Atlas forums if you need help, however I suggest you do as much research as possible beforehand. Furthermore, there are several Atlas plugins that do more than simply provide additional maps.
  • AtlasLoot provides a loot table for each boss
  • AtlasQuest displays the quests associated with each instance.
  • AtlasMajorCities displays each major cities and all the NPCs, merchants, vendors, trainers info.
  • Atlas World Events - provide maps and quests information for WoW World Events. Maintained by Arith.
  • Atlas Arenas - provide arenas maps. Maintained by Arith.

Before Installing
  • Any previous versions of Atlas including Atlas' built-in plugins must be deleted prior to installation.
  • Atlas plugins (AtlasLoot, AtlasQuest, etc.) designed for any version of Atlas prior to this one may need to be deleted as they may not be compatible.

It's up to you.

I still dont know how much memory Atlas uses when running.
That's because addon memory usage is an insignificant and meaningless measure.

I still dont know how much additional memory would be used per map-module (on average), or how much would be used if I had them all loaded at once.
None. Map modules are just texture packages... yeah, with maps.

I still dont know if Atlas offers features like "Goto location" (ike Carbonite).
Atlas is just an... atlas. NOT a map addon, NOT a GPS navigator, NOT... many things. It's just an atlas. A collection of maps with notes.

I still dont know if Atlas offer "way points" (like Tomtom).
See above.

...and I still dont have a clear picture as to how Atlas handles things like Quests, Quest Givers, Quest Zones, Gathering (herbs, mining), NPCs, Enemy faction.
How Atlas can handle them?... Go figure.

These (and other) points are very important to users and I would hope that they would be touched on in the add-on introduction and list of features.
The addon introduction is rather clear, and cover addon features nearly precisely. If you didn't took the time to read it, however...

I'm not trying to knock Atlas or anyone else here. What I am saying is that Im trying to make a decision based on information that has not been made available, and thats somewhat frustrating.
How about making decisions on available information?

I hope that the features and introduction can be updated to a more comprehensive and detailed description so that we are not faced with downloading and installing... then learning features by trial and error.
They already comprehinsive and cover every available feature and even provide usage instructions.

Considering the number of WoW add-ons, that is not the best approach.
Considering your inability to read, that's not the best way to ask questions.

Thanks.

Ill check back in a week or two and hopefully there is an updated introduction available.
I don't see it happening.

Maybe a little more clear info?

Hello,

I am considering an add-on to replace my current map add-on because it will not work in some battle grounds (leaving me blind) and doesnt always work in instances (leaving me blind).

When I came across Atlas I was intrigued because of the features.

Then I browsed the forum and found that most of the comments have to do with confusion over the download size and/or installation... and I also noticed that many of those comments were not clearly communicated or even in sentences.
Just partial ideas strung together in jumbled fashion.

But on the flip-side I found that the information presented by Atlas is often somewhat vague or incomplete.

The result? Of course this results in a mess.
A confusing mess which makes it tough for a potential new user to gain the information needed to make an intelligent download/install decision.

Sorry for the inconvenient.
The concern also include that we may not frequently update some modules / plug-ins, such as the classic wow or the BC maps. Splitting those modules / plug-ins into separate addon package has the benefit that user only need to download the updated ones, instead of the entire Atlas.
I know some people feel this is not convenient as they need to download those modules / plug-ins one by one. In this case, we do have provided a full package on our Google Code web site.

That too like this past patch, there was a TOC update but no new dungeons but a update would have to be done before everyone started reporting Atlas Outdated etc.

Tason for the split was to reduce download size. with each new expansion comes new maps adding to the size of Atlas. and as most updates are for current content it was decided to split Atlas so you only need to download current content and not all the old content aswell.
