Known Issues/Bugs

Current Features
These are the current features in Power Bars. If one of these features isn't working, then there's possibly a bug you need to report. Please see "Known Issues" before reporting a bug however.

* Essentially, I don't care if you use parts of this AddOn or all of it. It's free to use and redistribute, and the images are part of that deal. All I want in return is a bit of credit for the work that I do, just as I credit others for the help that they give. A simple link back to this page (if applicable) and a reference to the user Chamenas (or Lulia) is all that is needed. As long as you aren't claiming the work is your own, I'm not terribly bothered.

FAQ

What Is Power Bars?
Power Bars will be a Power & Resource display AddOn. Its purpose will be to offer customizable displays for all Power and Resource systems in the game, this includes (but isn't necessarily limited to): Mana, Rage, Energy, Runic Power, Focus, Eclipse, Holy Power, and Soul Shards.

The frames for these resource systems will be movable, will be offered with various display options "right out of the box" and offer the user the ability to customize them with their own personal images and colors if they so wish.

Why Power Bars?
I'm aware that there are already similar AddOns out there. So you might be asking yourself "Why re-invent the wheel"?. Well, for starters, this is my VERY FIRST AddOn. I've NEVER made one before. Now, I have some experience scripting and coding, but no experience with the WoW API and my Scripting/Coding skills are novice at best. Thus, I have a LOT to learn.

I wanted an AddOn that I could use to personally customize for Holy Power and Soul Shards, since I didn't see any single AddOn out there that did it in such a way as I would have liked. Power Auras did pretty well, but I wanted something a bit better, and something a bit easier to adjust.

However, like most things in life, I really like to share what I make with the world. I didn't want to make a small AddOn that only I would use. I figured: if I'm going to learn how to make AddOns, then I'm going to make AddOns I can share with the community. Thus the origins of Power Bars. The intention of this AddOn is to be an intuitive and easy Power & Resource display management system, offering the user total control and power over how they see their resource and power bars.

You should notice that mana, rage, energy, runic power and focus all have the same issue in that it updates in "chunks" as opposed to a smooth steady rise. This is somewhat intentional, as the alternative is significantly more CPU intensive.

I could add an alternative option though, so you could use the more CPU intensive one to get smoother updates or, if you're worried about CPU usage you can use the "chunkier" one.

In any case, what I said about versions earlier is probably changing. I may end up wrapping updates from 0.6 and 0.7 into a push for v1.0 and simply begin work on that release version now.

I believe then this addon would truly be complete. I will understand if you have misgivings about adding anything, but I figured I should post a vote anyway . . .

Thank you for your hard work on this addon.
Right now here's the tentative plan:
  • v0.6: Power Bar changes, this will include numerous changes to power bar functionality, keep checking the AddOn info box for more information on specific changes and if any "beta"s of the beta go up.
  • v0.7: Combo points added, Vengeance tracking added, a few new options for existing resource systems.
    ...
    v1.0
I'm still iffy on whether or not I want to do the Vengeance stuff as well, or if I even can, but I'm considering it at least. As far as Combo points go, I will try to add them in v0.7. I'm not sure how much, feature-wise I will add for combo points and I'm sort of looking for community feedback on what would be useful (within reason) to add to a combo points feature. Right now, visually, I'm thinking of keeping it simple with numbers, but may add options later for a more aesthetic approach to combo points display, similar to how other resource systems work.

After v0.7, barring anything else major needing to be added, I will work towards pushing towards a v1.0. What does this mean for you guys? Well, it won't see any major differences functionally between v0.7 and v1.0, however I will probably looking at small, minor things I can do to make it run better, and a few options I can add. The effective difference is that I'd like to begin work on a new AddOn, and that, going forward, changes to Power Bars will come in smaller doses, focused on suggestions from you guys.

Before v0.6 happens I'm planning on possibly streamlining the script quite a bit, so it might take awhile before you actually see a "beta" for 0.6 go up with new features that you can test. The reason I'm doing this is because I'm hoping to learn techniques and coding practices that will help make adding things easier, and thus allow me to do the actual coding of v0.6 and v0.7 much faster.

Thank you for your patience, I'm humbled that people do enjoy and use this AddOn and I hope that you guys will continue to do so and share it with your friends.

You can use the Aspect Ratios section under Custom. It's intended for custom images but can work for default images as well if you wish to adjust them.

Edit 2(yeah i forget stuff): About the combo points maybe you should just use all the 3 suggestions that you made for the sake of choice.
Yeah, despite seeming rather small feature-wise, this has actually been the largest update I've done yet (and v0.4 was the largest before that). Couple those things with a desperate job search (if I don't find one soon, I won't be able to make addons for much longer!) and it's been hectic trying to get this one out, but it could easily be another week before it's realized.

My hope is to get this out before Cataclysm drops, but it might not hit until after. Once the version is complete though I'll be taking a short break to focus on my characters and getting them ready after Cataclsym, just in case I'm forced to take that necessary hiatus while I look for a job.

The moon has been flipped accordingly, just thank Blizzard that I hate their texture Rotation feature and made a new texture instead of rotating the old one or it wouldn't have been possible.

As far as combo points. I'm still deciding at the moment. If I did do it, it wouldn't happen until v0.7 which would be somewhat into Cataclysm at that point. I'll briefly go over my thoughts so that it makes sense (hopefully):

Technically Power Bars is still in a beta stage. It's working and has many features, but it's not where I envision the "release" version to be and thus it's not yet hit version 1.0. I had hoped to release a version 1.0 of the AddOn before Cataclysm, but I now know that that won't happen. Still, the priority is to get to version 1.0 as quickly as I can without sacrificing quality, stability, or my own personal sanity.

What do I require to make it to v1.0? I wanted a sort of "complete" list of features for each resource system that I included. When version 0.5 is done, that will be completed. I also wanted a "complete" list of features for the power bars (mana, energy, rage, runic power, focus...). With v0.6 complete that will be done. So, technically, after v0.6 is fully bug-tested I would be at a place where I would feel safe making the release version of v1.0 and hopefully spreading the word enough that more and more people download it, like it, and use it.

If I add combo points, that's yet another resource system to put in, as well as a list of options I'll need to add, which pushes back when I "release" it a bit further. However, people do seem to want this feature, which is a vastly gratifying feeling that they would like to use this AddOn on more of their characters. The ultimate intention of Power Bars is that you can have all of the resource management systems combined in one AddOn for all of your characters. It's an extremely ambitious plan, especially for a first AddOn, but I like ambitious plans.

I'm not without options. I could go to a release version and make combo points, etc... an update to the release. The problem with that is that people may see Power Bars as something which doesn't deal with combo points and thus never use it for that and decide not to take a look at it. So, at present, I'm still deciding. Chances are that I will add combo points, so the question just becomes a 'when' as opposed to an 'if'.

Also, a quick note on "complete", by a "complete" list, I mean a list which covers a good portion of the things users would want to manage their resource with. Obviously people may have suggestions in the future and I'm inclined to add them if they're reasonable.

In any case, that's some of my thinking, hopefully it makes sense. Thanks for using the AddOn and supporting me thus far. Tell your friends, spread the love! Hopefully plenty of you are excited for v0.5, it's definitely close!

There's been a few requests for it, but I don't yet have specific plans for it. Still, it's an option I'm considering. One of the main problems is I don't have any Rogues, Feral Druids or... Enhancement? Shamans to work with to test it out on those various classes. I don't have a Balance druid though, and I managed to work on an Eclipse bar (leveled a druid to 10 and also used a premade on the PTR) so it's certainly doable with some work.

What would people want to see in a combo points addition to the AddOn? A bar? Straight up numbers? Or the sort of fancy image distinction that makes this AddOn "different"?

I'll certainly look into it. I've just finished the "foresee" energy stuff but am playing around with possible ideas to be implemented based on it as well as fixing little kinks in the system for it. I had to make a premade on the PTR to do that testing though and since it might be going away soon I should probably focus on that stuff before considering other things which can be tested on my lvl 10 alt.

Certainly keep the ideas coming though. It helps motivate me to continue adding more!
