Talented  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)

Version: 2.4.6c
by: IBLJerry [More]

Talented is a replacement to the default Talent UI, with a lot of added features.

Feature List

  • See the complete talent tree on a single frame.
  • View and switch to your alternate spec when you've bought it.
  • Create and view templates for all classes and hunter pets. Hunters can view the spec of their pet and apply templates to them.
  • Set a specific template as a target, and see it when you're spending your next talent point on level up.
  • Apply complete templates with a single click, after a talent wipe.
  • Share your current build with other, or any template you've made.
  • Import and export templates directly from the major online talent calculators.
  • Inspection of other characters will also inspect their alternate spec, if they have one.
  • Added a Glyph frame, similar to the one from Blizzard's Default UI. This frame is independent from Talented main frame, though.
  • A macro command /talented apply <template> allows to automatically apply a template based on its name.
  • Shift-clicking on an entry in the template menu will open the template in a secondary frame, allowing to compare two templates side by side.

Talenvet v2.4.6 is compatible with wow patch 3.3.5.
Talented v2.4.5 is compatible with the new wowhead URL format.
Talented v2.4.4 is compatible with wow 3.3.0
Talented v2.4 is compatible with wow 3.2.0
Talented v2.4 split the glyph frame support into its own lod module.
Talented v2.4 stops checking the validity of all templates at load time. This makes Talented load faster and use less memory at startup. This means that the invalid templates for death knights will be fixed when you try to select them.
Talented v2.4 adds the point distribution of each templates to the corresponding menu entry, as well as the name of the primary tree.
Talented v2.4 fixes a graphical glitch that occurs when RestartGx() is called.

Talented v2.3 integrated Talented_SpecTabs with Talented.
Talented 2.2 fixed some missing pets errors, and provides several usability improvements to the UI.

I am thinking about improving the glyph frame as the next evolution of Talented (what will probably be Talented 2.3). Although glyph "templates" are a possibility, it raises a lot of issues. First, I'm pretty sure I can't automate the application of glyphs, I certainly can't do it in a single click. Another problem is that in order to be useful, Talented would need an up-to-date list of glyphs. It is definitly more complex to maintain this list than a list of talents. For instance, the information about talents (or, more precisely, spells that are linked to talent ranks) is always available for every one using a given version of the game client. Glyphs are items, as such, the availability of information about them is dependant on the realm of the character, even the time of day (as, just after a world restart, it's less likely that every glyphs will be "queriable").

Finally, the glyph "templates" provided by mmo-champion and wowhead use a encoding scheme that looks weak and may be difficult to maintain in it's own right, adding even more difficulty. Without the ability to import/export to theses sites, the whole feature would be less useful.

So, I'm thinking about it, and I hope you've understood that I've thought a lot about it, but right now, I don't feel it's worth the investment. Time will tell, though.

Glyph Templates

I love this addon. It makes it very easy to look up a good spec online and copy it into a template, but one thing it lacks is being able to specify what glyphs I want. Many specs that are posted online also included some or all of the glyphs that you should also get with the talent points. Wowhead's talent calculator even has a small section where you can include glyphs with the specs. Would it be possible for talented to also have this functionality so that when I'm in template mode, I can also specify what glyphs go with the spec I'm templating and then set it as the target template and have my glyph window tell me what glyphs I should be getting to fit the template?

new to Talented...probably dumb Q...

I just started using Talented a month or so ago. I have a druid that I'm lvling up (currently at lvl 71)... While I'm leveling I'm running a feral spec, but after the 3.1.1 (original last week, not yesterdays 3.1.1.A patch) I decided to dual spec, so I could star healing for some of my guildies. I created an alternate template, and started setting up my Resto talents.

Two things have popped up with this... First, some how my template for Feral has copied itself on top of my resto template. (I have the target {the little numbers in the upper right corners of the skill icons} for the feral spec showing on the resto page. Is there some way I can edit the template to get rid of the targets I don't want and put the ones I do want in?
Second, do I have to export each template separately? It doesn't seem like I'm exporting both templates, only the active one.

Oh yeah, last Q. Can you export them to a file on your PC? Seems like a strange way to save something, saving it to a web site...??

Talents not Showing

I just started having a problem with this addon tonight on an alt, a level 34 warlock. I hadn't updated my talents in a few levels so I got them all up to date through 33. I dinged 34 about an hour later and opened talented to change them. However, it doesn't show all the talents I had learned earlier today any more. At the top right, it shows the level as 29, not 34. It still only says I have 1 point left, however. I even tried assigning that point to a talent I had learned earlier today and nothing happened. Is there anything I can do short of deleting the saved files? I'd really rather not lose all the templates I have as I often change on my DK. Thanks.

Edit: I just want to say that I mistakenly blamed this issue on talented, but it is not the cause. I just wanted to get my talents learned so I disabled the addon and relogged. However, the talents were still missing, so it seems the problem lies with Blizzard. I remember hearing about this problem when 3.1 came out, but I thought it was only with dual talents (which I don't have yet) and I thought it was fixed with the 3.1.1 patch. Obviously Blizzard has failed. Thanks for such an outstanding addon, and I really love the way you integrated with the new dual spec feature.

What happens if you type this in the chat ?
Code:

The pet spec should be available in the template menu, under the different classes and above the inspections.

I do not use Talented myself, but I don't mind adding support for it if it's really simple to do.
I had report of failed assertions, due to what I think is a race condition. When receiving the inspection data, I get the class using "UnitClass(unitid)", and, after retreiving all information, I call:
Code:
assert(Talented:ValidateTemplate(template))
Which failed for people using Examiner. The reason, as far as I understand it, being that Examiner was auto inspecting people, which, associated with lag, may cause data to be received after the unitid has changed, and the assertion fails.

I have added a Talented function: [tt]Talented:GetInspectUnit()[/tt] that you can hook or replace to provide a unitid that will be used when Talented receives "INSPECT_TALENT_READY". The default implementation is:
Code:
function Talented:GetInspectUnit()
	return InspectFrame and InspectFrame.unit
end
and when using Examiner, I changed to:
Code:
if Examiner then
	function Talented:GetInspectUnit()
		return Examiner and Examiner.unit
	end
end
but this caused assertion failure.

I have removed the assertion, and simply discard the templates if not validated now. I still think that having auto-inspections added to Talented is recipe for disaster, as the UI doesn't scale well when the number of inspections grows.

IBLJerry,

In your changelog of Talented I saw that you added support for Examiner, but removed it again due to autoinspect. What exactly was causing the problems, and is there an easy way I could add support for Talented in Examiner?
I do not use Talented myself, but I don't mind adding support for it if it's really simple to do.

It seems you either spend points immediately, or use the option to confirm learning. Meaning i'm better off trying to spec with the blizz default ui, and only using Talented to actually import a build?
Talented works differently than the Default UI. And as it has precedence, I have not changed it for 3.1.

In order to play with a spec, you use a template. Templates are available for all classes, and are completely free.

When you change your spec, you're doing it for real.

With templates being available, there's no practical reason to have a "preview Talent" option. Use a template.
