GathererDB WoWHead  Popular! (More than 5000 hits)
Version: 2.0.2013-06-15
by: Esamynn, dinesh, MentalPower, Nechckn, Norganna, norganna_uploader

WoWInterface is happy to announce that we have teamed up with Wowhead and the Norganna's AddOns Gatherer team to provide you with an exclusive downloadable Wowhead database for display in-game by Gatherer.

This addon will provide you with all the information currently in the Wowhead database showing all known locations of herbs, minerals and treasures. Now you can simply load up Gatherer, plug this database into it, and know what can be found in the zone you are in, without having to discover them yourself.

Wowhead will be providing regular dumps of their database to the Norganna team, who will then update the GathererDB Wowhead addon exclusively here on WoWInterface.

How it works
The import procedure is simple and painless. Once you have installed the AddOn and have reloaded the game, ensuring that both Gatherer and GathererDB_Wowhead are activated. When you finally log into the game, follow this procedure to import the new data into Gatherer:
  • Open Gatherer's configuration dialog.
  • Click on the red "Database" tab on the left-hand side of the dialog.
  • Click the import button in the main panel.

Make sure to add GathererDB-Wowhead to your favourites list here on WoWInterface and check back periodically to see if it's been updated, or get an email sent to you whenever they update it if you have those notifications turned on. Any time they update it, just re-download GathererDB-Wowhead and update your local copy.

Help improve the database
If you want to contribute your data back to Wowhead to continue expanding the database, please download and install the Wowhead client (available for both PC and Mac) and just follow the instructions on their site.

About Gatherer
Gatherer is an addon for herbalists, miners and treasure hunters in World of Warcraft. It's main purpose is to track the closest plants, deposits and treasure locations on your minimap.

The addon does not track like a tracking ability does, rather it "remembers" where you have found various items in the past. It does this whenever you gather (perform herbalism, mining, or opening) on an item, and records the specific map location in its history. From then on, whenever the item comes into range of being one of the closest 1-25 (configurable) items to your present location, it will pop up on the minimap.

When you view your World Map, you will also see the item locations clearly marked on each zone's map.

About Wowhead
Wowhead was created with one sole intent: to provide World of Warcraft players with an extensive database and tools to enhance their gaming experience. This website is our contribution to this wonderful game.

Our user community is a big part, if not the biggest part, of Wowhead. Almost all of our information comes from our users, through data uploads from the Wowhead Client, comments on database entries and screenshot submissions! The site also features forums, where users can ask questions, discuss important Warcraft-related topics, recommend and share favorite addons, and much more!

...Couldn't you just add one zone at a time, rather than wait for the whole WotLK data to be sent for this addon? Just would make better sense in my opinion, and you already have tons of information on the area around Valiance Keep surely? I mean, you must have "tester" characters yourself, who run around the areas making sure the node coordinates are correct, couldn't their node info be added to the downloadable database?

QQ babies

I find it annoying that people are crying about WOTLK data not being fully gathered after the game has been out for just over a week and Beta gathers may not be exactly the same as the Live-gathers. There are a ton of level 80's out there already that are herb/ore farming with a database that's much more extensive than anyone who's complaining about the addon.

So go get yourself to 77, get your Cold Weather Flying Skill . And do some flying around. This addon will be there for when/if you lose all your data of gathering in the game someway or somehow.

I'm very grateful for this type of addon surviving for so long. There have been so many good addons that died out before TBC because the authors moved on.

Not to stick up for the QQ'ers, but WoWHead has most, if not all, of the nodes already in their database. I don't think it's a matter of collecting nodes -- sounds like WoWHead just hasn't done their part yet to update this mod.

My 2c.

Agreed. Wowhead needs to update the database part for the game :P

Folks,

There is no super-secret conspiracy, though it would make things at least semi-interesting if there were.

Once we have the data, it will be included. Until then, Gatherer works exactly as it has for years now- and has worked since the release of WotLK.

Happy Gatherering,

Nikk

That is when it was uploaded to this site. Check the version, not the date when it was last updated....

I suppose I might be a bit contraversial with this post but bear with me.

I love gatherer.
I downloaded the node database from the gatherer site.
I quickly deleted all the nodes that had given me.

Why?
I felt that the nodes in the database were a waste of my time.
I would ride from node to node on the hud, only to find zip, nada, nothing.
At first I thought this was a timing issue. You know, someone else had mined it recently and it just had not respawned when I got to it. So I gave it sometime, I logged in a different times, I took different routes.

Bust.
So I deleted the nodes, wandered around and generated my own. Even then after a while I noticed that some of the nodes I had mined were simply not spawning, neither were they appearing as little green circles in gatherer no matter how long or how close I hovered by them.

So...
My BIG Q is...
This latest database, filled with exciting new stuff for WOTLK, is it merely the old data with new stuff added?

For those that are a LONG LONG way off level 70, you know those poor fools wandering around actually enjoying the game rather than on a never ending quest to level...is there really any point in using your dataset at all?

Hi there, Apaseall,

Keep in mind that Gatherer was created prior to the existence of many of the "database" sites, much less those showing maps of the mining, herbalism, and treasure locations.

The whole point of Gatherer was, and is, to simply record the specific point where one of your characters has gathered a certain ore, herb, or treasure. By recording these locations, you can then know which area, and sub-area, to visit when you require a certain type of ore, herb, or treasure. When you use the HUD, you can further ensure that you have "covered" the entire area, ensuring that your time spent gathering is as productive as possible.

GathererDB originated about a year ago, in response to requests from our users for some sort of "starter database" for those new to WoW or for those occasions when they lost their personal database for one reason or another. Most of the team, myself included, run a separate data file for testing purposes, but as for when we are playing ourselves, use Gatherer with only the nodes we have "discovered" ourselves. We actually find that to be a big part of the fun- discovering the nodes on our own, rather than knowing where they will spawn.

So... what does any of this have to do with you? Based upon what you are saying, you have been gathering items and adding them to your own database without issue, et cetera.

The fact that you are finding locations that do not currently have an item spawned upon them is by Blizzard's design. For every zone, there are only so many nodes active at a time. What Gatherer does is point you to the locations where there *may* be a node of a specific type, rather than having to wander aimlessly.

The current database consists of all of the nodes that had been submitted to WoWHead as of 07 November 2008. Normally the nodes are moved or adjusted between beta and live; hence having to wait for the locations of the new nodes. The new nodes should be added pretty soon, by the way.

For some more information about the nodes and their spawn behavior, see http://www.elsanglin.com/pool_appearance.html . That discusses fishing pools, but the same sort of paradigm exists for all nodes, each is not active at all times, most areas tend to rotate which nodes are active for each profession.

Hope this helps clear up any misunderstanding.

Happy Gatherering,

Nikk

We get it!

I for one completely understand Nikk what you are trying to say in the post below. We are trying to come to grips with the fact that we can't run quests with a database full of nodes to herb/mine/fish. It's something we've come accustomed to since gatherer released the database. I for one didn't really come to use gatherer much (i installed it a few times but went through a bunch of setups early on) until this database came to pass.

What I am wondering, as a database administrator for SQL (mostly mySQL), is what do you need help with? Is tehre anything I can do to help. I want this database back on my machine and so don't a lot of other people. Questing is 2x as profitable with this information, and i have 3 more level 70's to get to level 80

Re: We get it!

Ryan,

Truly appreciate the offer- we just do not have the data yet, is all.

The most that folks can do is to use the http://www.wowhead.com/?client so that WoWHead is able to accrue and combine all of the data. Once the data meets their standards, they pass that information on to us.

At that point, it's pretty simple to do, we simply need the data to import is all. We'll be sure to put up a notice when that happens- you can also add the database as a favorite and WoWInterface can email or PM you when it is updated.

Happy Gatherering,

Nikk

Question

Nechckn,
Would it not be possible to write a script with the assistance of WoWHead to export their node database nightly and build a fresh copy of the data file that has all the nodes in it? At this point, I have manually collected over 100 mining nodes in Shollazar Basin, but I know I don't have all of them, and I have barely mined in the other areas. Just a thought, I have some experience with such things, and knowing how complex the WoWHead site is, I think one of their code monkeys could get in touch with you guys and help you out with generating that datafile for you.

Anyway I'm rambling just though I would toss the idea around. Thank you for all the hard work you guys do on these mods.

With many of us using wowheads utility to upload node info, they should have a pretty good amount of herb and mining nodes.. parse the ones that are new since the WotLK release and give us an update. Then weekly updates as new nodes are added. At this point i could care less if all nodes are in the database, those of us that are using the wowhead util will continue to send them in.

There is no reason that the this hasn't been updated with WotLK data with the amount of time that has passed since the realese. Alot of addon developers have updated there stuff multiple times.

Come on, get on it.

At least before 3.x i could use gathersync to share nodes with people..anyone know if any developers are going to update to work with 3.x

CKlint,

There is a reason, as noted many times now. Keep in mind that this is certainly not our only "project" and is only a secondary aid to the main Gatherer line. Gatherer has been updated more than once since WotLK and will continue to be updated when needed- and when our volunteers have the time to do so.

If you, or anyone else, would like to join the team and take over this particular aspect of this project, we more than welcome the help! We can surely always use experienced Lua developers, especially those with SQL database creation and data import/export knowledge and expertise. Simply post a note in the Gatherer subsection of our main forums at http://Forums.Norganna.Org .

As to the sharing of data, that is included within Gatherer's basic framework. You can share to your guild and, or, party completely automatically or send specific nodes to others... have no idea about any other addons that are supposed to do that, since it is included.

Happy Gatherering,

Nikk
